Did you get it back on the road yet Tony?

I did.:D

It was down for a couple weeks while I spent my weekends camping, but I found an open day and drained the block and radiator, flushed some water through, and put in a new water pump and thermostat. Running now, and I have some piece of mind about the cooling system.

Water pump is a little strange, it has an extra coolant port for an oil cooler that some 40s come with, but I just capped it off, seems to work.

Looking forward to seeing your 40. I bet your son is stoked.

After some MUD research, two water pumps are available for the FJ40 2F from Toyota. One has the oil cooler coolant port and the short shaft for a clutch fan, the other has no extra port and a longer shaft for a direct drive fan.

The short shaft with no extra port is no longer made be Toyota but can be bought aftermarket, CCOT, etc. I chose to go genuine Toyota, and plug the extra port for the oil cooler I don't have. Used a hose bypass cap, see pic.

Put in jump seats today. Need to track down some seat belts now.

Tony, any more updates on this cruiser ?

Hey Lance. Not too much new, just driving it when I can. Thinking about an OME 2.5, but it's a bit of money.

Still learning more about it. I'm embarrassed to say after 9 months, I finally took the cap off the distributor and found out it has been converted from points. Not what I expected to see on a '75, but a good surprise I guess.

Trying to round up some tools to address the small rust spots once the weather warms up. So that's the project coming up.

Still very happy with it. Have you sold any more cruisers to Mud guys?

Tony, great to hear that you are happy with it. It was one of my all time favorite 40's we ran across. I did sell my 1990 fj62 to a mudder in Dallas. I hated to see it go but I had to get a ford f350 to tow my 40 to the TLCA events.

Keep in touch

Tony,

My PO of my '78 mustard truck put the same water pump with oil cooler on it. Plus installed the same rubber cap that you did. It cracked and blew apart on me while driving. I recommend installing short piece of copper pipe with soldered pipe cap and a short piece of hose. I will be installing the correct water pump in the future.
Good luck with the truck

Thanks man, that's a good idea. I have a spare rubber cap just in case, but it does seem like a real weak point. Copper pipe and cap will go on my list.

Got around to addressing the strong fuel smell that occurs during fueling and taking corners with a full tank. I took off the metal shield for the fuel filler neck and found that one of the breather hoses from the tank had broken away from the evaporator and took the fitting with it.

Looked into getting a new one from Toyota but it's not produced anymore. I tried a JB Weld fix, but I might have to track down a used one if it doesn't hold up.

New front bumper and a bezel repaint from black to white to match the top. Paint was Dupli-Color BFM0335 Ford Performance White. I tried several colors before I got a good enough match. My top isn't cygnus white so I tried to get close with something else, and it turned out good.

Also installed windshield mounted rectangular mirrors from an earlier 40 Series. The new telescoping arms didn't quite line up under the windshield hinge (earlier 40s had smaller hinges I think) so I had to grind about an 1/8" the top corner of each.

Part Numbers:
Front Bumper Pewter - 52111-60030
Mirror Arm - 87902-60030
Mirror - 87901-60011

Beautiful! That Bezel repaint just took your rig to a whole new level of beauty! Now to change your Avitar :-)

Yeah good point, the old one might have to go.:)

Looking good, Tony!

Thanks Chad! Hope to see your rig at the meeting tomorrow. I still haven't had a chance to check it out in the daylight.

If not tomorrow, Tony, we should grab a beer some other time. But there's a slim chance I'll make it to the meeting.

yup, been there, done that - any fuel hose with the same diameter from the auto parts store will do
