Looks like the exact same kit. 100% no problems with the KM2's. love the combo.

Awesome, Tony. Let me know how the install goes. I have plans to install this kit in the future as well. Just need to save up the dough!

After some MUD research, two water pumps are available for the FJ40 2F from Toyota. One has the oil cooler coolant port and the short shaft for a clutch fan, the other has no extra port and a longer shaft for a direct drive fan.

The short shaft with no extra port is no longer made be Toyota but can be bought aftermarket, CCOT, etc. I chose to go genuine Toyota, and plug the extra port for the oil cooler I don't have. Used a hose bypass cap, see pic.

I also went this route, about a year ago, and now I have to get back in there and fix it because the cap has started leaking. I'm trying to figure out how best to fix this and came across your post.

Yeah, I keep an extra with me since it might break. I'm still trying to find a more permanent solution. If you could, please post back here if you find something better.

How about installing an oil cooler from an FJ60? Then you would use factory hoses to cover the outlet. I think your older block has the threaded mounts, no?

Oil cooler is a good idea, I might look into tracking one of those down.

Started the suspension install this weekend. Ran into a couple issues that I hope to resolve the week and get it all done next weekend.

Some of the small pin alignment bolts on the spring pin plate at the front/rear frame mounts are bent and came out pretty rough. Regardless of that the bolts are too long and would interfere with the new OME spring eye wrap, which is wider at that point. Seems like small set bolts that are the right length would be really easy to include in the new pin kit from OME, but shouldn't be hard to find at the store.

What stopped my progress today was the rear shackle kit... The holes, and as a result the threads, at both anti-inversion plates are off and are going to have to be replaced. I ordered in some axle shims that didn't make it in time so I wasn't going to finish this weekend anyway, but I was bummed to find this when I tried to build the rear shackles.

Finished the install this weekend. Looks and rides much better. 4* shims installed in the rear for the driveline angle, and new u-joints next week and we'll see if the vibe goes away. Rear t-case u-joint was on it's way out and ratchet strapping the axle into place with the joint at it's angular limit probably wasn't good either. I think I will add some 2.5* shims up front. The caster was just on the positive side of 0* and should be at least 1* but I've read 2-3* is better, even without PS.

Toybota- did you come up with a solution for your vapor separator? If not, I recently bought a used one from cruiserparts.net and then realized I didn't need it (probably should've checked to see whether I had one before assuming I didn't!). Yours if you want it. I haven't been to a cruiserheads meeting in a while, but if you can make it to month's meeting I could give it to you then.

PM me if you're interested.

Pierps,

I ended up getting one from cruiserparts.net also. Thanks for the offer though. Hope to catch you at a meeting sometime.

Cheers

Looks good Tony, hope you are enjoying that sweet 40!!

Up front the shims made a world of difference for me. I never tried them in back. In the back I put a front CV drive shaft from an FJ60 and it is smooth as silk. You're going to love the OME more and more as it ages; it doesn't 'settle' so much as just get more supple in my experience. I've owned three OME sets now: an '83 FJ40, my LX and my troopy, and I'd buy another set tomorrow if I bought another Cruiser..... of course, I may not be able to afford another set because my wife would leave me if I bought another Cruiser right now, but never mind.:D

Remember your first impression--slowly fix up and keep in good condition---nice Cruiser- drive it! find the little bugs and fix. keep driving and wheeling--enjoy! Resist the frame off resto mentality until the rig tells you it's time.
I'm getting to be a larger fan of the Mustard-even though mine is the blue---

Tony, I have not seen any updates lately, how is the cruiser coming along?

Hey Lance,

Yeah, it's coming along slow, but it doesn't need much and is always ready to go when I need it. I've just been real busy lately, lots of work/traveling.

I've accumulated all the parts for a front disc brake swap from a 1976-78 setup. That's the next project, I just need to find some time to get to it and bring in some more experienced help.

A friend of mine just bought a 40 and immediately took it apart and is sand blasting, etc. I was thinking about it but I just can't bring myself to open it up like that right now since it's in pretty good nick.

Hope you're well, drop me a line if you're ever up this way.

Do it! Dive in like me and get in over your head! I'll get it all back together sometime in 2014! Haha

The disc swap is going to be a good project I think. Let me know if you want to do some wrenching.

Well, it's been about 10 years since the story of this 40 was updated, so it's probably time. The torch was passed from @Toybota to me in the Fall of '21 and I've been slowly taking care of maintenance items and making changes as I'm able. I considered starting my own build thread, but I enjoy seeing these old trucks evolve as they switch hands between Mud members. Tony, hope you don't mind me resurrecting your thread.

Cold weather was rapidly approaching, but I had a chance to drive a few hundred miles before winter set in. Our family was remodeling our home and staying in a rental with a less than ideal garage, but I was happy to have a dry place to park.

Over the winter, I jumped right in with a knuckle rebuild (under the light of a 100 watt light bulb), new brake cylinders and shoes all around, new engine seals (valve cover, timing cover, pushrod gallery cover, oil pan, and rear main), replaced all cooling hoses, water pump, and thermostat. Since the transmission and transfer case were out due to the rear main replacement, I resealed them since they also leaked and sorted out the parking brake.

The rear main was so loose it came out with the flywheel, it was the worst of my leaks.

All that kept me busy for most of the winter, but I did get a chance to clean up a few things, replace the later model tube tire carrier with a 4Plus and rattle can the primed areas on the quarter (I was going for mostly 1 color, not perfection).

By the summer of '22, I had also added a new set of tires and we were back in our own home.
