I've decided not to rebuild the engine in my 1971 FJ40. There is a thread here: engine post that describes some of what I found when tearing into the engine. I don't know if it is worth anything to anyone, but if it can help someone instead of heading to the scrap yard, let me know. I've got the oil pump out, timing chain cover, water pump, etc. Also the head is available. Here are a few pics. If you are interested and need more info, just ask.
