Hey all,

First poster here, but long time admirer. I have a completely stock 1971 FJ40 I purchased from the first owner in January. I recently started playing around with the idea of swapping in a Toyota diesel to replace my stock F engine and looking for some advice.

I'm leaning towards putting in a B series engine in to keep it somewhat original, ideally a 3B that I could turbo later if needed. I would also love to keep my stock 3spd J30 if possible, I love the uniqueness of the column shift and also just completed the mini truck PS conversion keeping the column shift in tack.

Has this been done before and/or is it possible without replacing my entire driveline? Open to other alternatives as well. My budget is fluid, but don't want to throw money away, willing to do all the work my self (can weld and fab) and willing to take the time to do it right. I want a highway cruiser that I can drive to the off-road trails.

Thanks so much for your help!

Josh

Hi Josh,
Nice rig! I don't think the 3 speed will mate to the 3b. I believe the input shaft is wrong. You might consider a 2H or 12HT with 5 speed. Much less work and a whole lot more bang for the buck! You probably won't be happy with just a 3b especially if you have hills/mountains to contend with. Just my $0.02 worth.

The 3B would need a turbo for high country, it works for us low landers. Check out some swap threads searching the forums.

Not sure a J30 would be good with a diesel engine? Also the input shaft is fine spline on a diesel and is also a lot longer. It could be done though, just not sure on drivability.

Thanks all, I was afraid the J30 may cause some headaches. Looks like I'll need to do some more digging to find the right setup.

Thanks again!
Josh
