I finally separated the trans and transfer, so I could clean a little better and get it ready for the Adapter!!! I hope these baby steps aren't boring anyone yet!!!! hahahhaha except me....

Transfercase Again!!!!!

I know everyone is so excited to see more transfercase action!!! hahahah!!!! I had a great snow day off work, and the storm was weak, so I decided to do a lil more landcruiser work...
My seals and gaskets finally came in for SOR, everything except for the seal I actually wanted Toyota # 90311-38047 (the front output shaft seal) so I ordered that at the local dealer today...
8535926912_9680b37147_z.jpg

My new speedo gear came in so I went ahead and installed that, I remember doing this with my '82 pickup truck, it went from 10 over to 5 under, but it was a free gear in a donor truck and I was rebuilding my transmission....This should be dead on for the 40 with 33's according to another post here on MUD...
8535926714_9ef4b0b6fb_z.jpg

and there it is, in there somewhere, I guess i'll appreciate that $36 when my speedometer moves.... it was supposed to be $40 something and I talked them down!!
8534818575_ebfee1d37c_z.jpg

And here is where I got to...of course the cover is just on there for looks, it won't go on until I get the AA piece to bolt it to the NV4500.... Also I got a Case Saver from JT Outfitters, I have heard the ups and downs from them, but so far I haven't had any issues, I watch what I buy from them though....and just because I am so proud of myself, here is a picture of what this beast looked like about a month ago when I pulled it out...
8480047951_22e272329f_z.jpg

Also I cleaned and organized a little bit today, it looks much better and I can find things and use them easier, hahah!!!! but that means I had to push the bikes to the other side of the basemebt.... Don't worry babe, we'll go for a ride soon!!!!
8535925628_533d48c248_z.jpg

Haha, yes it is!!! the didn't actually give us the day off, but they were approving all leave, so it cost me a vacation day, but it looked bad at 0545 I turned around and went back home, turns out I could have rode my motorcycle in by 1100, hahahah!!!!

Now that I installed that new speedo gear and it will be more accurate, anyone know if the Speedo portion itself is rebuildable? mine started doing this, then whining, then snap.... my cable is still good, but I haven't pulled the cluster again...also my odometer stopped prior to this happening... Maybe an issue from my rebuild?? I seem to remember the speedo gearing being kinda self contained, and separate from the odometer...either way my parts cluster has springs hanging out of the speeo portion....

**Correction** I just watched the video, haha I guess once this got a little worse, the odometer stopped spinning, cause its working in this video, haha!!!

It will take me a while to get her back on the road and all, so I figured I should probably dive into this before all I want to do is drive it....

Engine cleanup!!

So now its engine time!! I thought it was a 305 HO but now I found out it is a TBI 350 with a GM carb on it.
8556544768_802a91b144.jpg

So first I need to get rid of everything on this ugly beast!
8556544146_374629f1cc_n.jpg

so here is what that is under all of that...
8556543740_2dac88a2ac.jpg

after the first round of oven clean....
Here is the GM aluminum manifold from a 70's-80's Monte Carlo or something..

8555392895_9a869d0050_z.jpg

Then dad gave me his Eldelbrock Performer manifold and carb!!
So that is cool, I'll clean that thing up!!!!

8555392515_8872184784_z.jpg

Oh, and there is this stuff sitting in my living-room!!!!
8555392339_0a56641d29_z.jpg

and then there were a few brewskies!!!

Engine week has been somewhat succesful!!!!

As soon as I clean the basement I just make it a mess again!!!
Cleaning began on the engine parts:

Then I pulled the valve covers and started to clean again....
They were pretty nasty, and but I wanted to retain the black GM covers, after a few days of scrubing and soaking I was starting to think the cheap chrome ones would have been a better choice, but I pressed on.....

I took the wire wheel to the outsides after I was done with the insides, then a lil 220 grain paper, and primed them, one with a little krylon the other with dupont 1K self etching, because I had a few sprays left in each....then the hi-temp gloss black

8561473687_556f337788.jpg

After several rounds of oven cleaner the block was ready for some spray, I wanted to do the block in beige so it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb in my engine compt.

Only a few more needed and I can bolt it all together and see how it fits, and then the cutting, welding, and adapting begins....:steer::steer::steer:

work work work!!!!!

Today I loaded up everything on the parking brake drum so it is ready to go, and put the other seals in the transfer case

8602349791_73a0056969_z.jpg

Then I loaded up everything so I could take it all to the shop and get started with bolting everything together...
8603451208_0724389169_z.jpg

I purchased the gasket set for the engine, hopefully I can get the valvecovers, manifold, fuel pump, and such all bolted down now, and drop the pan and replace the oil pump and rear main seal as well. I also want to get the firewall painted before I start putting the engine back in. Most of the vacc shift 4wd stuff is out already.

Firewall clean up session number one had good results, I can't wait to get some paint in here......

AFTER:
8610148826_0112c59949_c.jpg

I am still cleaning up some of the wiring mess from the PO and I am guilty of running a few random wires over the past few years as well....

I also washed the cruiser, removed the battery tray, re-routed some wires, removed the 4wd vacuum shift and linkage, and got the engine ready to go.

Slowly but surely I am moving along, I think it is because I am still recovering from all the fun I had in Germany!!

finally

While waiting on more paint and grommets to arrive for the firewall and fenders, as well as wire loom (the good stuff) I decided to tackle this beast!! i have been putting it off because I was nervous to cut a transmission up that I just paid for, but it was just as easy as I thought it "should" be...
8614410885_2cb1756f5f_z.jpg

Some extra pieces....
8615517426_c122db930b.jpg

And now another part ready for a little paint....
8615517762_ab8476d66a.jpg

Everyday I am getting closer...baby steps I guess.... I have to work the next two and a half weekends straight through, so I foresee a few long nights in the garage.... Hopefully I can cut out these old motor mounts and clean up the frame, then haul the engine over to the shop this week....

I got the over-sprayed rhino liner & gunk off my frame, and I removed all the motor mounts. The frame is looking much better. I also got a little clear coat on the newly painted fenders...

8629302830_d0b826c55c_z.jpg

The trans is finally all bolted up to the transfercase, the adapter and bellhousing went on fairly easily. I got the shifterbase & twinstick hardware installed.

8629301148_02ac167b33_z.jpg

All of the vacuum shift linkage is finally off the frame, the heater fan is painted and reinstalled. I also bought some new cheap hella horns. All of my firewall grommets showed up, but now I'm waiting on the new wire look to show up.

I just need to get this engine out of my basement and under the hood!

Might as well leave those fenders off and out of the way until that engine is set and bolted in place. It helped out a lot while I was working on mine. Sure beats scratching them up or bending them when you need to reach across them. Opens up a ton of space! Sure does look sharp!

I never actually took the fenders off, just masked off everything and painted what I could. It doesn't look like I'll have to take them off, but I hear what you are saying, hopefully the fender covers will keep them healthy....

wow, its looking good. You must have been waiting on me. It seems like I just sent you the adapter the other day.. You'll be driving again before me, that's for sure.

And so it begins.... I got a friend to help me push the engine out of my basement and load it up on the S10. I then was able to get the FJ40 in the garage and in position to mock up the driveline to see how it all fits...

I took a lot of measurements and went by all the guidelines that Advance Adapters seems to have, as well as, advice from other forum members.

Having the lift around (and this extra engine dolly) really made life easy.

More measuring and adjusting and measuring and adjusting...
8633596952_38e31d2b61.jpg

The NV4500 and the 3-speed case are all the way up against the floorboard, it looks like my transfer will set about 2-3 inches back from where Toyota put it, and because of that, the hump in the floor doesn't line up with the High/Low shifter linkage, thoughts???? go as high as I can, or mod my floor??
8632484935_7e82507e23.jpg

The Headers are definitely a no-go, they won't clear the steering box as many of you had said...the ramhorns are on the way...
8633594632_32db3ec7b1.jpg

Motor mount placement looks good, I will weld in the L brackets tomorrow...

Haha, thanks, well I was waiting on you and a few other things, but it gave me time to clean everything up a little bit. I've been busy lately but now I have a little time in the evenings to really get started up!!
