Apparently she runs and drives but brakes are shot. Interior is in good shape. Exterior looks real rough. This would be my first time encountering rust and pitting like this. Is this vehicle too far gone? Im looking for a show vehicle: ) just a ski/ hiking rig that is very unique

Thanks in advance

Dang! That hood is held together with tape. Looks like lots and lots of bondo. I too was looking at this one. I have a 68 I'm working on and I figured it might be good to have another one for parts. The real early ones are tough to find parts for.

I've been in touch with the current owner, it was originally for sale in Hamilton, maybe 5 months ago, I was going to look at it the following weekend and someone else bought it.
He bought it from the pics sent to him, never seeing it in person, when he gets it he realizes it is much to far gone for him. So now he is re-selling it, abit higher than he originally bought it for.
I am supposed to look at it this Friday as we couldn't meet this past weekend.

For me, it will be most likely a parts rig, unless seeing it in person changes my mind.

So where in montana do you guys live?

Sounds like I should look for a different one in the 4-5 grand range that's in better shape

Thanks

That 55 would make a great donor for a very early restoration project, after working a very early 55 I can tell you that finding the unique parts to those vehicles is going to be exceptionally challenging and to do it right you would very deep pockets.

If I read your post above correctly you’re looking for a unique vehicle that is a driver, if so then your 4-5K should get you a better 55 and save you time and money in the long run.

Good luck and come back to post pictures of what you find!

If I had enough free time could I fix most of the holes by grinding cutting then filling with bondo or something like it?

you could cut out the bad and weld in good metal. most likely until I see in person, going from experience with 55's, the rear body mounts will be non existant, front body mounts are questionable, both front fenders are most likely gone on the lower section, both rockers, rain gutters are suspect.
looking at the rear pic, you can see rust holes above the glass and below the gutter, that's an unusual spot for rust.

So did you buy it Paul? I wanted it for parts but the seller dropped off the face of the earth on me. Check out the hood. It is taped together and then painted.

No not yet, same thing here, having trouble getting ahold of him to look at the rig. It's as tho he is "trying" to sell the rig but not really. He keeps re-listing it on craigslist every few days. Tried to see it twice this weekend and twice in the last week and a half.
I'm thinking there are many more issues than just the hood.

I do see he has it listed as a 1968 now.

I'll try again this week to see it.

I asked for the VIN as I wanted to compare it to my 68. There is a lot of weird stuff on early 55s. Everything is different on 68s.

Funny that the valve cover is freshly painted... Any recent engine work listed??

I did get to look at it this past weekend. The engine is an F 1/2, oil filter is on pass side, but it does have the long runner manifold. It is too far gone for me, even for parts, at the price he is asking.
Eric, I didn't get the vin, I am thinking he told me 11,000 something.

It very well could be a 67 production date but 68 model. Have a small collection of micro-fiche for early cruisers. One is for a FJ55 with a 67 date, would have to check the month. My 68 FJ40 has a 9/67 production date but is a true 68 with all the changes for 68.

Biggest things I think stand out on the 68 FJ55 is the steering wheel and small front turn signals that mount off the apron and not the fender. What were some others?
