I have been working pretty steadily on this truck for the last month or so. Not logging a ton of hours but logging hours nearly every day. All kinds of things needed to be done to proceed with assembly.

Had a handful of items left to de-grease, sand blast and prep for paint, then let the body guy paint this stuff. Had to fab a few brackets to mount the skid plate to the oil pan. Had to figure out what the difference is between early and late oil filter assemblies and decide which one to use. Had to get the brake shoes, wheel cylinders, springs, drums and hardware all installed. Had to yank out the leaf spring u-bolts, chop them off to the right length and re-install. Had to figure out if I am missing any items and also figure out all the hardware I need to assemble plus buy the hardware. Had get the steel brake and fuel lines all figured out and decide on what to buy and use, ie stainless, nickle/copper, powder coated, galvanized, ect. Had to do a resto on the inside of the fuel tank. Had to locate and purchase new felt for the fuel tank, Thor 100% wintergreen for rubber resto and other non-shop duties like this. And I am sure there is some s*** I have forgotten too that I have done in the last month.

In a week or two I should be back into uploading pictures since there will be things to show. Lately the work doesn't really show much results so not much worthy of pictures. Soon though final assembly is in full swing and the pictures will start coming again.

Cheers

Thanks for the update. I just said it in another thread, looks like you're in a good jumping off point for the New Year.

By the way.....

here is something extremely rare. This is the only one of these I have ever seen or owned. This was in a 1966 Patrol I got from the original owner over 10yrs ago. I got the truck when he passed away. It had 40k original miles and the owner had kept a very detailed file on the truck since he bought it new in 1966. The file had letters to and from Nissan before he bought it with him inquiring about options, color and so forth. In the letters he selected this radio, which was an option. I think it was made by Toshiba, I can't recall the brand exactly now all these years later but it was a big Japanese brand.

The radio locked into the sleeve with a key, notice key hole back rhs side. It could be removed, old old school pull out deck. Batteries could be put in it and along with the speaker could be used outside the truck! Very cool really....

Unfortunately we don't have one of these for the 64 restoration. :crybaby:

Very cool !

The owner selected this for hard brake and fuel lines....

http://www.agscompany.com/faq/10

Originally they would have just been galvi coated. Nissan also put a rubber sleeve over all the hard lines.

I offered up to the owner;

-galvi, possibly with rubber sleeve
-stainless steel
-nickle/copper
-and these Poly Armour PVF coated lines. He picked these.

I ordered up all the hard brake and fuel lines today. I also recently purchased a high end flaring tool so will be doing all the flaring of ends myself. I have done it before but with a cheapo crappy tool. Looking forward to using the new flaring tool.

awesome restoration. I am down in Colombia buying a super nice Patrol to ship back. PM me if there is some kind of small part I can find for you down here and bring back. I am scouting parts sources down here so when I ship a few Patrols over there we can have them available.

That is a beautiful Patrol. Funny but I have over 20 pictures of this same truck on my computer! I don't recall where I got the pictures, I think somebody sent them to me years ago. I have some good friends in Colombia and been there myself four times. You are right, it is in extremely good condition.

sending a pm!

Hit a few snags, nothing major just little stuff. Seems I get 4-5 days worth of work in and hit a snag which holds me up 2-3 days or more. Pretty typical and normal I suppose when restring a truck like this.

I will say if I get a chance to do another Patrol. I would like to have the stock hardware, or as much of it as possible plated rather than buying new hardware. I don't mind buying new hardware but it just would be much smoother and easier to have all the stock hardware plated. The problem with this truck is that it was fairly beat down when the restoration was started. A lot of the hardware was badly rusty, busted bolts, ect ect. On top of this the truck was disassembled over 10yrs ago. So there is also some missing hardware, not a lot missing but a few nuts & bolts here and there. I also didn't tear the truck down myself 10yrs ago. I would much rather tear it down myself and send it all off to be plated as soon as the truck was torn down.

Any ways, drivelines are going in soon, e-brake not far from being fully rebuilt, fuel tank fully restored inside and out, and more. So making progress every week. Will post some pictures before long.

Cheers

I used Bill Hirsch "cast iron gray" high temp exhaust manifold paint on the exhaust manifold, primed it first with their high temp primer. Obviously engine color on the intake manifold.

So I had some fairly major dramas recently.

The trans shop had put in an old style speedo pinion and drive gear for the speedo. Nissan changed the speedo pinion/gear a number of times in the 20yr run of the 60-series Patrol. The very early trucks pulled the speedo from the very front of the t-case, no free wheeling hubs so it was fine. We are using f/w hubs on the 64 so that wouldn't work. Now I believe in the 1960's when f/w hubs were fitted the rear output flange on the t-case was changed and the speedo pulled form there. I had taken the trans shop several t-case to work with when the rebuild was performed, including one from my 77 Patrol. They used the early stuff which is good to keep it original for the year. However, they made a big mistake. They did not put in the right spacer after the speedo gear. So when I put on the rear flange it broke off the tip on the pinion. This resulted in me tearing down the flange to figure out what was wrong. The pinion they used was badly worn, wasted is more like it. On top of this the only good parts I had for speedo pinion was from the 77 Patrol. However, it pulls the speedo pinion from an entirely different location than on the 64. This was a change made by Nissan in the late 60's and is a much improved upgrade. The early style pinion gears are simply a crush sleeve, located at either the nose or the rear output of the t-case. Which in my opinion is no good. The later style is a splined gear that rides on the main drive shaft right behind the 4wd sleeve. Nose cone is tapped for speedo in this location rather than the speedo port at the outside of the t-case next to the flanges.

So any ways, I had to tear the entire t-case down and set it up with the parts from the 77. Not only is the speedo different the nose cone on the t-case is different. Luckily all the parts I have from the 77 are in great condition. On top of this the 77 speedo is meant for 7.50 tires which we are running, due to teeth count on the pinion and gear. The earlier parts were suited for 6.00 or 6.50 tires.

Early style speedo on the right, broken and badly worn. Later style on left.

Three different speedo pinion gears, the one on the far left is from the 77 and the upgraded part.

Here you can see the rear flange along with the speedo pinion which is wasted. I believe this was added at the dealership when free wheeling hubs were fitted. Or around 1964/65 Nissan started putting this on USA spec Patrols so that the dealership could easily fit f/w hubs. F/W hubs were pretty common on USA Patrols after 1965. This flange is alloy and is the only alloy part I have from 1964-1977 for the t-case which leads me to believe it is aftermarket or afterthought. This has now been removed as I am using the 77 t-case parts. You can see the aftermarket single lip seal in the flange. No where near as good as an OEM seal which has a double lip.

different main drive shafts, not only is this different so is the nose cone and related parts.
264539_3943339199854_1134118595_n.jpg

I got it all back together and it is just about ready got go back into the chassis. Just waiting on a few seals to show up for the output flanges. Another thing to note is the top cover on the t-case. I had previously installed the early style cover. Well, early stuff the t-case was not vented. It is not uncommon for old Patrols to blow their front and or rear main seals on the t-case. If the rear goes it destroys the e-brake. Nissan added a vent to the top cover to help with this issue by the late 1960s. So I decided to use the cover from the 77 t-case that is vented. You can see it installed in this picture. There is actually a splash guard or baffle behind the vent on the cover. So the difference is covers is not just a hole that is tapped for a vent.

I am taking a break from the project as I am heading to KoH tomorrow. Updates will continue when I return.

More progress....

I was waiting on these OEM seals to come in from Nissan, had my fingers crossed and they came in! T-case out-put seals, aftermarket I removed from the t-case are on the floor. You can clearly see the OEM is much better with double sealing lip.

The smallest seal on a 60-series Patrol, pinion drive seal, NOS on my finger and old on the floor

And I installed the trans + t-case back into the chassis

The new speedo pinion location, while not stock for a 1964 I believe it to be much better as it is an improved/upgraded design by Nissan and still correct for a 60-series Patrol.

The E-brake is installed and just about all done, hard to believe these are 50yr old parts that have been restored!

The fully rebuilt rear driveline is also installed. There is a seal at the slip joint in the driveline, it is no longer available so I made a new one out of some felt.

What a crazy (to me) intake and exhaust port set-up...

Ya I am sure it is different than a Cruiser. I have never had the chance to work on a 40-series much. Perhaps someday I will get the chance so I can learn more about the differences between the two trucks.

Cheers
