Also curious, fjfjfj, why the change in running board material? Just personal preference? Or new information indicating that the "pyramids" are not correct?
Red, I am using the same material. I just decided to re-do the running boards because they were not perfectly straight on the outside edge due to getting bumped around over the years. I originally bought the real bright white pyramid that M. Bradshaw used and what others on MUD had mentioned. That white pyramid was NOT the exact material used on the 1962 FJ40. Tom Binns had the exact original material as his running boards were in very nice condition. He actually has a picture of the comparisons on his build thread. Maybe you have seen it. He looked around and was able to locate what he thought was the exact material in Escondido at a restoration company. When they sent it along to him they had changed it. Instead of larger squares, they sent him smaller squares. They told him the larger squares had been discontinued. Him and I spoke about it and I looked around for awhile but could not locate the larger square material. I drove up to this restoration place and ended up buying the smaller square material. I figured if I could not find the exact I might as well get what was closest to the original as possible and in my case, the color was such a great match to my white cruiser. I liked it much better. The quality was also better then the white pyramid but,,,,,,,,it was much more expensive then the white pyramid. I went ahead with it anyway and am very glad that I did. It looks so much like the original, smaller squares though but still, it was a good choice for me. Others use the pyramid white and like it. M. Bradshaw did his cruiser in that wonderful Nebula Green color and his pyramid white just pops. It looks fantastic on his! Anyway. I do have extra un-used pyramid white should you decide you want enough to do your running boards. MY WIFE SAID NO FJ reminded me to cut my small square material correctly this time around as I did not even notice that they were cut wrong before. So, will be doing that on Monday. Here is a picture of my old ones. You can see they are pretty nice looking.
Thanks for all the great info here and elsewhere on the forum, fjfjfj. Your posts, pictures and parts sourcing stories are an excellent resource for everyone. Thanks!
Here are some pics I took today in the wine country here in Temecula. I bought the cruiser about 1 year ago to the day that I finished it. The last thing to get done today was the front license plate holder. I took over 100 pictures. Here are a few. Hope you guys enjoy them and thanks to everyone for your encouragement, detailed comments that kept me on track to do an all stock original restore and most of all, thanks to those who gave up parts for this project. We could not have stayed so original without the help of you guys. fjfjfj
Thanks Dean and thanks to you I even remembered to line up the step material properly this time round when I re-did them. Your email arrived just in time. They came out perfect.
