First cut.
Got it..
I almost never use 80 grit here, I'll make the filler flat with 36-40 grit then use a light weight filler (USC Icing 26006) to fill the scratches and go to 100- 150 to flatten that, primmer and finer grits after that.
Look into USC Icing as yo get closer..

Thanks for the tips J. I will look into the USC Icing. Is it used in place of spot putty?

Yes, I'll make the area flat with the 3m light weight filler and use 24-36-40 grit. The courser grits get the panel flatter/faster for me (if I use 80 grit I might wipe over at the end just to knock the tops of the scratches down) then I'll use the Icing (spot putty) and lighter grit to finish the repair...
Primer filler and final block before sealer and paint..

I finally finished the initial sanding and laid down a coat of primer. In the last 12 days it has rained every day with a total rain fall exceeding 8”. I was concerned about leaving the sheet metal uncovered any longer. I am not displeased with the results. There is still plenty of sanding and touch up to be done for sure. Considering it’s been more than 25 years since I have done any major bodywork, it’s not awful.

This weekends progress.

First we had measles.

Then it was “second verse, same as the first”! Hopefully thus is final primer.

Slow progress this weekend. I applied the seam sealer (thanks @J Mack) and started the next repair area. The drivers side step had rust starting in the usual spot.

I sprayed a top coat this weekend but I’m not very pleased with the results. The semi-gloss is a lot more glossy than I was expecting and it didn’t lay down very well. I will get some satin black and give it a go next weekend. I am considering buying a paint gun. These rattle cans are getting expensive.

On a completely different area I have the step patch panel trimmed and ready for installation. I will use the panel adhesive @ j mack has suggested and a few weld spots to complete the install. I could have finished it today if it weren’t for the father day festivities 🤷🏻‍♂️ I did have the gift or my son’s presence in the shop this afternoon. That was great!
