Hey Pin_head... Welcome to the thread! I enjoy the creative feedback and discussion. However your assumptions around this ACE Alternator are mostly incorrect. I would suggest you give ACE a call like I did before I bought the product and they can fully explain how this alternator does produce 160AMPS at the correct RPM. Best of Luck.

Mattman, are you going to have the alternator tested before you install it?

I am going to have my ACE alternator tested before i put it in if mattman does not. This company has been around for a long time and though that means nothing I don't know what they would gain by advertising an alternator at 160amp when it is easily tested to prove the contrary. We will see what the test says before jumping to conclusions before stating facts that are not been proven as such.

hey Steven - Mines already installed and working perfectly. However I have a new ACE Alternator that i will take down to test out. I'll post up the results later.

thanks!

The site states higher amp 160amp stator and diodes are installed. As well as new regulator.

Here is their statement on how the higher amp alternators achieve this

"A NOTE TO OUR CUSTOMERS ABOUT HIGH OUTPUT ALTERNATORS: High Amp Alternators reach their full power @1200 RPM.
At engine idle(@600 RPM)-these High Amp units will provide you with a reliable and steady 90 Amp output.
These High Amp Alternators act as a 'SmartAlternator' and once your battery has reached 'Full Charge' the Alternator will supply only the necessary amperage to keep the battery charged at full capacity.
Keep in mind the amperage output of an IR/IF Alternator is controlled by the Internal Voltage Regulator and will vary depending on your battery's state of charge and electrical load conditions."

I would like to see the results once it gets tested. I ran one of these back in the day in my 4runner. Never had any problems. However I have also heard a lot of discussion about them also, a lot of it was in reference to what Pin Head said.

I heard a lot of the high amperage ones dont make power on the low speed RPM.

If these do make the advertised power reliably I will definatly buy one.

I am with pinhead on the ebay alternators, never again. I had one where the internal regulator failed and output full power to the harness, fried my fusable link and stranded me. I just don't trust it. I am planning the photoman conversion with a new toyota sequoia alternator. More expensive, yes, but in the end a cleaner and more stock toyota solution. Just my opinion. Problem I see is actually verifying that what they say has been done has been done. It would take alot of inspection and research to actually figure out if the internal regulator they have "replaced" is up to the task of the higher output, etc. Many of the companies out there that are selling "rebuilt" high amp alt's are shady small time businesses and you just have no idea what you are truly getting. To me, this is a vital area that can go very wrong. I learned this the hard way.

Well I hope you're wrong :) I am curious if it will put out the described amps. Even though its an 'eBay' sold alternator they have had a brick and mortar store for decades. they sell on the internet like a lot of brick and mortar stores do nowadays.

I hope for your sake too. I would be asking lots of questions about the internal reg. It's one thing to have it not push the max output but it's another to leave you stranded.

Yeh true, only way to find out is to take a chance and gonna carry the old alternator with me for a bit just in case..lol but this may deserve a long term update. This could help out someone who can't really afford all the brackets and sequoia alternator, like me :

Hey Guys all great points and great feedback! I appreciate the alternator conversion kit I think its top notch and if its the right choice for you great. On the ACE Product -- Stevesnj said it best ACE is a Solid company known for making solid products and workmanship. For me the ACE alternator meets my needs and to date has been very reliable.

I had to pick up some parts so tonight I ran my backup ACE Alternator and the 80AMP TLC Stock with me to Autozone. Unfortunately all they could tell me was pass or fail, both passed. It would be nice to get some better information. I'm happy try a different place, but I'm not sure where I could take it. If anyone has a suggestion please post up...

Thanks!

Am I incorrect in thinking you should be able to check the actual output of the alternator by simply hooking up a meter while the engine is running. I have never checked amps but have routinely checked voltage output from an alternator when at 1500 + rpm, that's how I realized the internal reg on my alternator was gone and pumping too much voltage out.......

If you read their web site carefully, it says "160 amp stator diodes" It does not say 160 amp stator and diodes. It also says that all the major parts are checked and reused. A 160 amp diode is not going to make that alternator produce 160 amps, it is just a little higher capacity diode. They could put 300A diodes in too, but that wouldn't make it produce 300 amps.

So they aren't really lying, they are just misleading you. Look at the bright side: you already upgraded the wiring so you won't have to do this again when you get a high capacity alternator.

I'm not questioning the product, but isn't this how ANY internally regulated alternator is supposed to work?

I contemplated the ACE alt until I found Photomans kit and after doing the math, $90 for the kit, $80 fleabay Denso with 130K, $20 replacement brush courtesy of Beeeeeeeeeeeeno I soon forgot about ACE.

After getting Bill's kit I knew I had made the right decision, fit and finish are second to none. The fleabay seller was a yard in Tenn that had great feedback, answered my question about whether it was a genuine Denso within an hour and took my best offer for $80 shipped. Of course Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeno was on the ball and had me a brush two days later.

I only wish I had the scratch to also get the pulley Bill makes in order to make belt changing easier but other than that I'm stoked with how it came out. Did a short thread here on the install

Can you provide me the link to this quotes on their site. I am getting upset that I have been misled.

Thanks

It is the same link you posted above but I had to search for Landcruiser. Look under features.

Heres there number, give them a call? (877)-903-4150
Number was found on URL -- http://www.ebay.com/itm/Toyota-Land...odel:Land+Cruiser&vxp=mtr&hash=item2c5b5cb239

BTW - I just called them - Some of the web content is general text, hence why it might be confusing. On this specific Alternator they told me they do upgrade the stator, they do add an extra diode, and the do replace the regulator. Item is designed to give more AMPs at idle. I sent them this URL so they can comment directly.

Either way I feel confident in this product.

Thanks...

Okay so i called Joe at ACE Alternators and Starters in Whittier California. Phone: (877) 903-4150
I asked him exactly what he does to the alternators to achieve the 160amps. This is what they do

Use OEM Nippendenso core which is cleaned and repainted as well as the pulley

Old Components are removed leaving the shell

The stator is new with new copper windings, they do not add on or clean any windings.

Stator is upgraded to '3 wire' winding from the stock.

Rectifier is upped to 4 diodes

Regulator is NEW from Transpo Electronics for the new components and to put out up to 14.7 volts Part # IN437 just for this alternators' specifications

Then each alternator is tested at between 600-750 rpm then @ 1200-1500 rpm on a Snap-On tester that uses a load and not just calculates it based on the rpm for more accuracy and uses an ECU simulator to simulate vehicle system load.

Now if this is all true I don't know i am not there to see them test it and I am having a hard time finding someone to test this alternator. HE will take it back at no charge if this does not put out the amperage he advertises.

My feeling is that the proof is in the pudding and I will only be satisfied by their claims once I get the test results back.

Great information, do you plan to have yours tested somewhere or is he going to supply you some data?

BTW -- I like Pudding as Cheerios was never really my thing :D

Well I want to have it tested, all I have is his verbal testing methods.
