Engine is out. F-ing torque converter was seized in the crankshaft so I ended up with a huge mess. All in all it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

Yep an $8 part killed a motor that is otherwise unkillable.
Ha, forgot to say congrats!!! I can barely wrangle my 2 so you are a brave man.

Why does a 98 require a 98 specific motor? I did not know there were differences from 98-2002

You can use an engine from a tundra, sequoia, or any year land cruiser/lx as long as it is non VVT but will have to use it as a long block with the cruiser accessories/oil pan. The earlier model cruisers and lx' used a stronger bottom end from my research. Used sinthered forged rods and 1 piece forged crank.

Maybe I am missing the obvious, but the motor is out, why can't that block be rebuilt? Freshen up the block, slight overbore, new rings and pistons, polish the crank if needed, deck the block and rebuild the heads and put it all back together.... What am I missing? (I obviously know nothing about these rigs, so I am genuinely curious)

Cost is the biggest factor at the moment. Machine work in Jackson is expensive if you want quality work. Also over sized parts from Toyota are not available or hard to get for the 2uz. A lot of it is due to the motors having such a long service life. There are plenty out there in the 300k plus club. Aftermarket support is either cheap Chinese garbage or over priced performance oriented parts.

10-4. Interesting about the service life. Is the piston bore grooved or just looks bad? I understand the reason for looking for a used one, now just wondering if it is gonna need an overbore.

They are deep enough that you can catch your finger nail in it. Usually with bad scaring on one side of a cylinder it indicates a bent rod.

Ouch. It is a little far, but I will keep an eye out for a motor.

Replacement will be here Sunday. Thanks again Ton504

What did the bumper end up costing you when it was all said and done? I'm shopping for one for the wife's lx and want to see all of my options before pulling the trigger.

It wound up at $1400 shipped. That's the bumper with stinger, cutouts for LED bar and cubes, complete hardware kit, and powder coat. Just slightly less than the blueberry before Slee adds shipping. Substantially more than the ARB.

But it's WAY lighter than both. And for me, looks way better.

Just tracked it. It will be here tomorrow. Will post up pics. Unfortunately it will be 2-3 weeks before I install it. Out of town the next 3 weekends.
