So, I had a similar error after having my brakes fixed. They had missed connecting a vacuum hose when replacing my master cylinder and it gave off a code like my canister was going out. Not sure if that helps...

So I talked to my mechanic about this. They originally troubleshot this issue and said they inspected the hoses and everything looked intact, then reset the code and it didn't come back on until after I picked up the truck.

They think it is the canister, said that he has seen this in many 10+ year old cars - a charcoal canister that is oversaturated and breaks down inside. He thinks replacing it will take care of the issue.

So, having replaced the fuel cap already, and no obvious breaks in lines, going to try to replace the canister.

@CarbonCruiser sent you a PM to get your canister.

Wanted to give you guys an update on this thread since it got a resolution.

I was getting a P0440 code. Gas cap got replaced with brand new OEM. Still got the CEL.

I ended up biting the bullet and paying $550 all said and done for a brand new canister. Kind of BS because the canisters for 2003+ trucks were in the low $300s. Got it from Camelback Toyota, took about a week to receive.

Buying a used 98-02 canister was too risky because at this point they all must be in the same destroyed shape mine was in, so new was the way to go.

Swapping it out took 5 minutes, the hoses seemed to be in decent condition so I kept everything as is.

2 fill ups and 2 weeks later no more CEL.

What year is your 100?

Good to know your issue is solved-

Did you keep the old part and cut into it to check it out?

Great news.

If mine ever fails I would like to convert from my original that is under the hood to the design that is mounted near the spare tire. Has anyone done this conversion to save space under the hood?

I would guess that is more work than it's worth.

Reviving this thread. I have a '99 and have a similar issue with the same code. Mechanic told me it was the charcoal canister. Do you happen to have the part # you used? I'm having trouble distinguishing between the charcoal and vapor canister. Thanks!

No sorry I don’t have the part number. It is a black canister in front of the driver seat

By the way it was obscenely expensive, like $500 IIRC. I saw some posts on here afterwards where people were using cheap units made for Pontiacs or some other domestics that cost $60, you should look into that first.

Did you happen to check rockauto.com? Just got mine there for $315 with Evap sensor included- I ordered the cheaper of the two options, and it’s actually a Toyota part, with Toyota name and part number stamped on it. Mine was for an 04. Swapping it out is as easy as it gets. Lower spare tire, Unclamp a few hoses, disconnect one plug, and undo 3 nuts.

All things being equal, how long can one expect these to last?

An original charc can? ~15-25 years.

I just went through this, and no, there are no suitable aftermarket ones. I cut my canister in half with a reciprocating saw, dumped out the charcoal, went to Petco and got some aquarium carbon, refilled it, sealed it up with a metric ton of RTV and huge HVAC zip-ties. Total cost maybe $40 instead of $400. I was getting a CEL frequently and it has now vanished. More details here: Charcoal Canister Replacement Option

Has anyone tried replacing the older model ones under the hood with one of the newer under-body ones (placing it under the hood)? I would think the basic structure would be the same aside from some line routing and mounting, but that can't be too hard to overcome. No CELs but it does smell on hot days.

What happens if the canister is removed completely since it's an emissions type device? Friend wanted me to ask.
