Hey guys,

I've been searching the forum high and low and haven't been able to find any relevant into for the 100 series on this. There are a couple of threads in the 80's forum, but it seems that info is not applicable to 100. Two part question:

  • Any recommendation on where to source the replacement part for a reasonable cost? Stealership wants $800 for a brand new one. There were some generic parts from Autozone for $30-50 that people used on their 80s and made it work, but haven't seen anything for the 100s. Any recommendations here?

  • Where is the canister located on the truck, and can anyone recommend or give some tips on the replacement procedure? I saw some notes that it's not in the engine compartment, but is near the fuel tank. Wondering what the location/placement is like, and whether it will prevent me from trying to use a generic unit rather than Toyota OEM one.
If anyone can help with either of these, would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

it is closer to the fuel tank. rectangular. No clue on after market but $800 is steep. There are links to the field technician manuals on here somewhere that walk you through inspection and replacement in somewhat simple language. you can save them as pdf.

Thanks for posting the FSM. Any other links in the tech section? Can't find them.

By the way, the FSM portion you posted doesn't actually show the location of the canister. Any chance you can post that up?

By the way the reason I am asking is because I've had the evap system CEL on for the past month and want to get rid of it.

Thanks

Thanks all.

@hoser what do you think of the Autozone product from the 80-series thread? Do you think that's viable? Have you had to replace yours yet?

I may be looking at the wrong thing, but the canister for the '04 is listed for $331 at Camelback Toyota. Check with the vendors too that support the forum for good prices. Did the $800 price include installation?

My canister is still fine.... and so I haven't fiddled with it yet. It's usually a pretty simple device. However, I looked closer at it and there are a couple of electrical sensors (i.e. pressure sensor) which might pose a problem.

@Sandroad - who is the contact at Camelback that I can ask for?

Also I am seeing the canister on there, but it's listed for $550.96 - where are you seeing $331?

Our 2004 has been smelling like fuel when filling and we got a P0455 code today, so it looks like the charcoal can is toast?

This pic is from laying under where the spare would be. Looks like three 14mm bolts to drop it.

Not sure I'm ready to drop the coin on a Toyota replacement though...

Maybe not the canister itself but a solenoid or valve (VSV, CCV) or related item is not working properly. The attached FSM link gives you all the related items to check. With the cost of Canister replacement, I would try to rule out everything else before giving up $600.

I think it's located in the engine bay on the 99, but yeah same story.

@abuck99 how can you test the solenoid or the valve without the special tools?

If it's electrical- a multimeter. I'm sure there are some reference values for checking resistance. There are also some mechanical checks described in the FSM link related to vacuum. Napa, autozone etc have free tool loan program, so you could get a vacuum gauge and check against the FSM specs.

Wondering what symptoms you are experiencing: just excessive fuel smell or are there any starting issues, Codes, lights?

The issues are as follows:
  • P0440 code that comes on consistently 1-2 days after I reset/erase the code
  • Replaced the fuel cap with a brand new OEM one, which didn't fix anything
  • No excessive fuel smell during fill ups, but the exhaust definitely has some fuel smell to it, far more than my Tundra that has the same V8 4.8L motor.
  • Performance is not hampered in any way BUT
  • Ever since the code came on, the fuel mileage has gone down noticeably. I used to get 270-280 miles per tank, but since the CEL started coming on and staying on, it has been down around 245-250 miles per tank before it comes on.
Thoughts?

I have a used charcoal canister that I bought from cruiser parts.net but didn't ever install because the new gas cap solved my CEL issue. If someone wants to give me $100 and pay for shipping I can send it your way. The part description said it fits 98-2002.

This might help you narrow down or rule out the P0440 related issues:OBD-II Trouble Code: P0440 Evaporative Emission Control System Malfunction

I can't really see the canister itself failing. In simple terms its just a vented box of charcoal. Unless you rolled your truck on its side or upside down the chances of getting fuel in it and saturating it are prob slim. So logically I'd think that a valve isn't working, or a hose is cut or plugged- something in line. Just my opinion.
