Cool, thanks for the info. My existing lamp is a 81240-90802 dome light and is wired with the bump-outs....

1Ton,

As HJ47 said, 10/81 marked a production change in the dome lamps, although externally they all look the same.

From 9/73 until 10/81, the 81240-90300 was the one-wire lamp. Internally the first ones had a different switch which was later changed to the cheaper pivot variety.

In 10/81 two versions were made for the 12V vehicles: the Australian and European markets got the 81240-90800 along with the A-pillar door jamb switches and the corresponding bump-outs in the doors to activate them. The General market got the 81240-90802 dome lamp, and likely not the bumped-out doors.

However, there are some variations, as with the US market, and the Saudi market, it seems some vehicles were delivered with the door-activated setups, and in some cases doors were grabbed for use on the assembly line with bump-outs even when the assembled trucks were not wired to take the switches or the special lamp. And of course, over the years different owners can and do change a lot of stuff.

Likely your existing lamp is the 90800.

Can you repair it--it looks toasted.

Good luck.

The 2H in it has high KM's (well over 500K) and really needs a turbo and a 5 speed. The motor still runs great, but I'm skeptical about adding a turbo to such an old engine. So, I decided to go with a turbo 1HZ and H55. I have a H55 out of a HJ61, which needs a new input shaft b/c it's damaged. I went ahead and picked up a 1HZ input, and plan on installing the shaft, along with new gaskets, etc.

--plan is to use HZJ7X frame-side and engine-side brackets for an OEM look.
--FJ40 radiator
--will keep the tcase ebrake
--snorkel - probably homemade

Should be interesting...

I've also got a 1HZ and an H55f (need to swap input shaft also--which I haven't bought) for my 45. I want to see more about that part especially.

Dan, here is a pic of the 1HZ input. Its longer with fine splines.

There is an older thread in the Diesel or 70 series section where an Aussie does the conversion in his HJ75 when upgrading to 1HZ...

Excellent. I'll have to go look for that (not sure how I missed it).

Did you get it from Toyota, or source it from other sources?

Dan

I got it new from Toyota through a vendor on MUD.

Still need to source a clutch kit, slave cylinder. I have a 24V starter that I am 'hoping' can be converted to 12V. Any ideas?

Nice. Dave at Japan4x4 said he could get me one, but I didn't get a price or anything as I've got a while before I truly need one. And I'm guessing with a part number CDan can snag one.

On the starter: I *think* you can swap the motor core from other 12V starters onto your starter assembly to convert it to 12V. I think John at RADD cruisers mentioned that they take the 12V starters from the 2LT-E powered trucks to convert other starters to 12V. I've got a 12V 2.7Kw starter from my 2LT-E (the clutch went bad, and I got a new one from CDan) so I hung onto it just to see if that was the case someday. I think he might have been talking about swapping a 3B starter to 12V though, but I imagine it might work on the 1HZ starter too.

A starter is one of the few other bits I need to source from my 1HZ too, and I see that WCC has them for $375 (IIRC) so I very well may end up going that route anyway.

I'll snap pics/take measurements as soon as I get home (which will be at the end of the month) of the 12V 2LT-E starter for you.

Dan

Thanks for the info about rebuilding the starter...I'll look into that some more...

I got the new input and HZJ7x frame-side engine brackets from Dave at Japan4x4.

Wow, thanks for posting the pics. The second pic, that has the turbo, looks real clean...Nice!

x2

Don't know how I missed those. I can't tell just what kind of turbo is in that second pic, but I like how it fits in there.

Dan,

I believe that is the photo of my friend Paul's HJ47 pickup which I posted on one of my threads. If it is, then I believe it is an AXT turbo. i will ask my friend Paul and let you know. Maybe we send one with your bell housing?:D

Josh

Funny, my bellhousing showed up yesterday. Got it out of France, of all places.

I'm interested to know which turbo setup is in the pics, too. VTCruiser used an AAI (All American Imports) kit on his 1HZ into 60 series build and it looks like a nice kit...

I've sent Paul an email. I'll let y'all know when I hear back.

I have Dan's bellhousing sitting in my garage, but I have been too slack to send it... I will do it this week, I promise Dan:grinpimp:

Cheers,

Josh

No worries bud. I don't have an input shaft yet (nor will I for quite some time, most likely). Besides: I haven't dropped your roll bar off yet either. ;)

On the turbo front: I've got a Turboglide kit ready to go. I really need to get the other bits I need to collect to make the engine run (like a starter mostly) and then I'll probably put it on. If you can wait a few months (or more at my pace lately) then I'll have good clear pictures of the Turboglide setup on the 1HZ.

So.... pics of the french bellhousing? Do you know if it is a different length than the 3B H55f bellhousing? (I'm just trying to get a better feel for the overall length of the 1HZ/H55f/split case combo).

Dan

Ok boys, that turbo in my friend Paul's HJ47 is a Garrett turbo, and the kit is made by Holset (don't ask where I got AXT from out of that...I'm working too much and bourbon costs too much down here; I plead the 5th). Paul said that he is not that impressed with it, as it has quite a bit of lag (I think he is too picky, as I have driven it twice for nearly an hour each time and I was highly impressed with it).

Paul plans to instal a Berrima Fuel Systems turbo in it this winter. Apparently they now make the best system. He has one on his HJ78 which says is simply amazing. I asked him for photos once it is all installed; will forward.

I hope to be home for a bit in January Dan, so I may just use the roll bar as an excuse to come down and go for a spin in your Dad's 40:D I really NEED to come home, as the food down here in the land of Big Brother is getting me down. I NEED NEW MEXICAN FOOD!

Cheers,

Josh

got sidetracked...

Still collecting parts for the swap and need

-clutch kit with pressure plate
-slave cylinder
-plastic fan and clutch (may have already found one). My motor was 'supposed' to have one on it but it didn't show up with one....

-rebuild kit for trans and t/case. I don't think I'll do the rebuild myself b/c I don't have the pullers and press.

My crew cab HJ45 is getting some love these days. I chopped a '67 LPB bed and am refurbishing it, a tailgate and headache rack for it. Then, I'm going to replace the rear doors with OEM. It's turning out pretty sweet
