Ok before everyone rags on me ! I have don an extinsive search on both and know a few people who run or ran sagignaw power steering, but my question is which one is better? say 35-36 in tires, geared apropriately, f motor and three speed tranny. just want it to be more capable rig not to looking to build an extreme rock rig you know ! chim in here and tel me your like s and dislikes about setting up your power steering? and changes you would make?

Thanks James

If you had a later model with the 2F I would encourage the Toyota FJ60 conversion.
Since you have an F and will have to have custom engine brackets for the PS pump, etc. Might as well go saginaw. Cheaper conversion, more future modificaton options.

If your Going Spring over, or may do a SOA in the future GM for sure (or Scout)

This setup gets rid of all the Stock linkage and you will end up with less room for Play to develop aswell..

I ran factory power steering for years with an SOA and 36's. On the road it was great, otherwise it was way underboosted. Coupled with the fact that I kept wearing out center arms and bending stock linkages, I upgraded to Scout PS and 4x4Labs steering. I don't like the road feel as well, but all other aspects are much better.
If I were to do it again, I'd do regular Saginaw over the Scout just for ease of installation.

Famous last words, at one point I wasn’t going to either. Save yourself the hassle of doing things twice and just go Saginaw. Toyota mini stuff isn’t true power steering. You can boost Saginaw boxes and turning it into hydro assist is easy. Having lots of steering power is not a bad thing. I have gm Saginaw and wish I had a little more power on 35’s, I’m sure redneck rams pump boost is in my future, and hydro assist sounds fun. :)

oh and kick that 3 speed to the curb and put a chevy tranny in there.

thanks guys thats all i needed to hear! soa ,in near future plans , as is disc conversion,a nd thinkinking of the sm420,then id need a new rear too.......

saginaw...and to hell with the 35's...just like everything else...only spend money once. :)

38x14.50x15 SX's.

.... and Long's and PIG's and hydro-assist and beadlocks and flipped springs and SM420 and ...................................

Saginaw, cuz your rig will grow ;)

Hi All:

A buddy of mine has a '79 FJ40 that came with factory PS. He swapped to the "Saginaw" style PS when he did a SOA swap (switching from 33 to 36 inch tires.) Said the factory PS would "puke-out" on him trying to turn aired-down 33 inch 'Swamper TSLs.

I did the swap to Saginaw PS from "Armstrong" at the same time and can say that I see no reason not to do the conversion! If I was gonna run the rig with only "little" tires (28 to 32 inch) I can see using the stock PS or the "mini-truck" PS swap, but for steering power when running big aired-down tires Saginaw is hard to beat!

Good luck with your rig!

i love my saginaw steering it works great and i think i have got about 350 clams in the conversion it is a cheap venture if you search around for the parts. and it is always a good idea to think of the future this could be you on another year or two.

oK GUYS GOING TO STAR SCONGING MY PARTS TOGETHER ,ANYONE done this (dah!) i guess what i'm asking is what all will i need to get er done?

I put power steering on my crusier for $160, all junk yard parts except that stupid u-joint I had to buy from flaming river for $100.

Got the box off an 80s XJ 3 bolt 4.25 turn, got its high pressure line and low pressure fitting as well. Grab the steering shaft off the same XJ because it had the correct joint and was a slip shaft. Also grabbed the aluminum spacer that places the box to make my life easier.

Pump came off an AMC eagle, both box and pump use oil line fittings (think stock parts)

Steering cooler was an orphan ford temple tranny cooler. 2f smog pump bracket used to mount pump. Lengthened an F alternator tensioner. You’ll need a pillow block bearing for the firewall, look at the tech links for the part#

Plate of ¼” to make ps plate and frame enforcements.

You’ll have to do something about a drag link/pitmit, depending on where you are going with your suspension/steering (think highsteer)
