My friend/coworker is a hod rod guy. Having seen some of the stuff he has done with his cars and trucks, I asked him to make me a lid for my military trailer. I gave him a quick run down of what I was looking for and left my trailer with him. This is what I got. I am a happy camper. :)

All nuts are captured (welded in place), it opens nice all the way up and the gas struts assist alot (maybe a bit too much). It locks, and once locked none of the bolts are accessable. He figures the top cage to be good for 400 lbs.

I use the trailer for work, and it is more convienient to have it open on the drivers side. Otherwise I would have it open on the passenger side. Jerry can holders and a spare tire rack are next and then I'm good to go.

Bruce L once mentioned to me that there are hubs available for the stock axles which have a 6x5.5 bolt pattern. Anyone know of a source/part number?

Nice!

I think Princess auto may have the stub shafts. I have to go out there in the next day or so, I'll check. I want to do the same to mine.

I'm surprised how many pull gear in trailers out on the trail. Seems like if you tried to do any descent hard trails the trailer would be a major PITA! I figure if you can cram it in or on the rig, it's too much.

I can see you pulling it to base camp and leaving it as you wheeled, but not pulling them with you all the time.

very cool i have 67 1/4 jeep trailer and yours looks great i just put a locker in my 40 and i am looking forward to seeing how it pulls the trailer off road now

Very cool, are you going to add a weatherstrip (or similar idea) to make the top waterproof?

I have a lid on mine, it is great for keeping things dry in the rain, however it isn't 100% watertight (yet) and it can be a PITA. I have to take most of the stuff out after camping and make sure things are dry so I don't get mold/mildew when I store it for a couple weeks...

They pull them along on the Rubicon...you must be doing some REALLY aggressive trails not to be able to pull a 4x4 trailer behind

Norm, if you find the stub shafts let me know.
Yeah Kurt, weatherstriping for sure. I found some stuff that goes around the rear hatch of Toyota minivans. It looks like it will fit around the lid perfectly and the stuff is already molded in the right shape so I don't have to mickeymouse the corners. As well the lip of the lid extends down quite far.
Lars, I didn't even know there was a list for the canadian military trailers. I will check it out. Feel free to cross post. Now would be the time to add or change something before it goes to paint.
Jungle, the primary use for this trailer is to get my stuff to work (oilfield). The dirt roads can be quite rough, but nothing that would be considered an aggressive trail. Sometimes the pavement is worse.
Thanks for the comments. Here's a pic of the tow rig. Cheers.

My M416 would go anywhere the FJ60 would. They just tag along like they're not even there. You'd be amazed.

You have a really nice combo of vehicle and trailer. I like the top a lot. I have an M100 that I am trying to fit out as a trail trailer. My M100 has a tailgate installed so I am going to make a slide out kitchen for the rear. Will yours hold gear on top when you open it up. It kinda looks like it might want to drop it because of the steep angle when open. Nice job overall for sure!

Hey Dingdong,

Your truck is nice, hows it working out?

I had the pleasure to drive that truck when the previous owner had it. It was a sweet ride. Congrates. The trailer will look great behind it.

Sweet! Nice Rig too... I think i've seen that before ;)

wow othis looks nice! What color are you going to paint the top? Red to match or white or grey?

Paul,

Did you have that canopy made for your 70, or is a product you purchased? I want to build something exactly like that for my 45.

Dan

Edit, nevermind. I did some searching and found Crusher's info on it.

Wes,
I am quite sure you have seen the tow rig before. In it's virgin skin no less.

Jackass,
the tarp was made to Wayne's specifications by Chinook Upolstery in Calgary. I can't remember who made the roll bar. There is not much to either of them so any local shop should be able to make it for you. The box on the truck is actually a FJ-45 box. I will be selling all of it if Micheal can hook me up with a 75 series box.

89srule,
I was going to paint everything freeborn red with a black/silver powdercoat on all the bars hooks etc. We took the trailer in and sandblasted it. The colour that the clean metal came out in, a kind of gunmetal blue/grey looked so good I told the painter to match it. Should be done in a couple of weeks (or at least, that is when I will get to see it).

Photogod,
we got a couple guys to sit on the top and it didn't move. It is really solid. The struts are strong enough to open the top with 150 lbs on top and a dedicated push by me. Once open it stays open. The most it will see is a couple of mountain bikes and a duffle bag or two that I forget to put inside. But you never know.

I decided to get some extra protection built around the trailer. Mostly for fun, but it should be functional to.

Here are a few more pics. Can't wait to use it.

I still have to figured out what I can do about changing the 5 lug pattern to a 6 lug to match the landcruisers. And I haven't quite decided on what to do to get a little lift. It needs to sit about 2 inches higher. But there is no big rush with that stuff.

Nice to see a dedicated trailer forum. Seems it is quite the hot topic this time of year.

I just went to my local trailer supply house (Henderson Wheel) and asked for an axle the width I wanted, with cruiser bolt pattern and springs rated to what I needed and sprung over. (the spring over gave me a couple inches of lift) I could have got brakes too, but decided not to. They even sell new spring mounting hardware and brackets. I think everything was about $150.00 too very reasonable.

I can make the bars, no problem. It's finding someone to do the top for a reasonable price that will be tough. Let me know if and when you want to sell the top and bars, I have a 45, should be a bolt-on.

Thanks,

Dan
