I'm curious about my truck and would like to know if it's been done or not. My truck had 89k on it when I got it. It would just be nice to know. I've heard that some manufacturers have records and that if it was done in a dealership that the vin would have been logged and it would show. Don't know if Toyota does it or if it would go back to 97 if they did. Any ideas for me? I'm sure I'm not the only one.

If it was a Lexus you could find out, but only if done at the dealer. Toyota does not swap info between dealers.

there is the characteristic goop in the front...

I would try to locate the PO, and find out from him, and try to ind the dealer for backup. I have not heard of any HG failures at that milage. I would doubt it has been done.

I would plan on doing it at 120k to 150k. There are many threads about what all to do as PM at the same time. Still, if you want a list et me know.

If I still had my original HG I would do a yearly inspection.

What I would do is support the transmission at the cross member and then remove the 8 bolts (4 on each end) of that cross member and lower the tranny down so I could inspect that back of the head where it meets the block.

One member was doing some tranny work back there and saw the leak before it blew.

I doubt many have done this so the accuracy on predictability isn't known, but that's what I'd do.

Toyota dealerships do swap info amongst each other. I've done this on numerous 4runners and pickups I thought about buying, particularly those with the 3.0 engine. I wanted to see if and when the V06 special service campaign had been done, when, and how many miles, long with other repairs. I've gotten information as detailed as getting new wiper blades. All a dealership needs is your VIN #, and they will look it up on the computer for any repair history at any dealership.

Not "any" dealership unless it was a warranty repair, that is the only common database availavle to Toyota dealers. Lexus has a common base. Customer pay repairs would be recorded only at the dealer that performed that particular operation.

It's not that simple to tell if the HG still good or no until you drop the tranny to see from the back of it.

I was just doing simple thing replaces the front crankshaft seal, oil pump seal, rear main seal and look what I've found in the 2nd pics. And don't get this wrong, the truck been well taken care and had extremely maintenance in the past 9 yrs since I purchased it new.

The truck has been checked regularly. The 1FZ-FE engine running smooth and quiet like brand new truck .Obvious no leaks, no rattles, all the fluids, coolant and reservoir also good, you name it I've done it all.No indicate the HG leak. And If I sell my truck to you in dealer showroom condition, same as in the 1st pic tell me who's not interested to buy my truck, but hey they didn't know it was leaking from the back.

One last thing, If you willing to drop the tranny just be careful the 1FZ tranny is so heavy at least you need 2 or 3 big guys to hold and drop it.I my self big guy 265 lbs couldn't do with 2 guys.

What goop? Can you please elaborate?

IIRC, there is a characteristic gray OEM goop that is used to seal the head and shows around the round affair in the front. Likely, there would be another color of goop used if somebody takes the head off? So you could tell that way maybe? wild guesses on my part...

Nope.

The goop Eric is talking about is the FIPG used on the two half moon shape plugs that allow access the the cams.

The factory stuff is grey and the factory replacement stuff is black. So if this stuff is grey in color than the HG is most likely original. I say most likely because it might be possible that some non OEM FIPG was used and it's grey also.

Rick,
Is this something you can always see when looking at the head while installed?

New goop on those plugs means new goop on those plugs. It doesn't necessary mean HG has been replaced. One can put in new goop there without touching the HG.

Yes, they are facing forward just under the valve cover. They allow access to the ends of the cam shafts for removal of the cam shafts.

The most common reasons to remove the cam shafts are:

Needing to reshim a valve on the #6 cylinder, as the sst won't work back there.

Replacing the HG

While the color of the FIPG can only indicate that the head wasn't removed if it's grey, there is a good chance that if it's some other color the HG was done.
