rust proofing the frame, John, once again, shot the wax into every hole, tube, joint etc ...
if the owner gets this done every summer then that frame will be good for years and years.

I could never stomach a chassis any colour other than black - until I read this thread. Nice work crushers.

the starter hole was cut out with a torch, the holes elongated to allow the starter to fit.
the disc is like new
the pilot bearing is rough
the disc is "stuck" to the flywheel by rust
the presure plate is rusted

the flywheel and pressure plate were resurfaced by sanding ...

the cyl walls are damaged by rust and the one is delaminating so a rebuild is recommended. the compression was 400+ across the board.

what is the possible problem with leaving an engine sitting in a vehicle with the thermostat housing off?
well, you friendly little field mice might decide to make a home in the water jackets. Ryan spotted this when he pulled the head. the amount of material that came out of the jackets was amazing. the little guy was pretty busy and had a cushy home ... for a while.
if we wouldn't have pulled the head we would never have seen the nest which would have lead to over heating and possible cracking of the head. of course trying to determine the cause of the over heating would have been a real challenge.
the precups were all cracked with 2 doing the cracking across the combustion side of the precup. sooner or later these would have fallen into the cyl and took out the piston and damaged the head.
the evidence on the block after the head was pulled from the mouse nest.

the pressure plate was also resurfaced using high quality hand sanding. needless to say a clutch kit was ordered and the flywheel was properly resurfaced.

the mouse will need to sleep elsewhere this winter.

the we opened up the oil cooler ...
seems it was a good thing we did. i have never seen an oil cooler look like this.
some was crystalized some was gooey ... either way, the cooler wasn't working as it should. makes you wonder what the rad and thermostate housing looked like.

then my next "first", i have never seen a cam bearing delaminate like this. again.
you can see the s*** in the oil passage still.

what is wrong with this ring pattern?

the bearings looked not that bad till you took a closer inspection.

the oil pump was opened up and some scoring of the plate is noticed so it will be machined flat again.

the t/case was opened and a new kit is on order. the gears are in good shape, the bushings and a couple bearings are showing wear.

that is it for this week.

...... And some people wonder why a restoration / refurbishment cost so much.

just went thru the entire thread, wow, very clean build, wow.

i'm just waiting to see bill gates in the background to explain the vast amount of cash pouring into this project. he must really have some love for this particular cruiser. as you know it woulda been so much cheaper to import a clean 74 and give it a LHD swap.

my first 4wd was a subaru GL, it's still parked in the woods. maybe if i get filthy rich i'll send it to you for a refresh, WRX turbo motor swap? ;p

great work!

thanks for the compliment, i try.

my customers are those that know what they want and require it completed to high standards ... dreams cost money ...

price out a new ford or dodge diesel, add the equipment that this vehicle has and how much is the investment ... now realize that as soon as that brand new computer comtrolled vehicle leaves the lot it has depreciated 30% ... add that the police can make a call and have it shut down ... next, most new vehicles the owners can not repair them in their garage

there are those, like myself, that would rather have the basic reliable vehicle that the owner can actually still work on.

it would have been cheaper to buy a 70/74 from Japan but still the mods cost money and, unless you have a good contact in Japan, you can end up with a roll back, rust bucket that will need a lot of work. the bond the owner has with this truck is an important consideration.

It is being built to his requirements in mind. A work vehicle that is also a comfortable all season DD.
