Just an update to this, autoelec guys replaced a 60 amp yellow fuse which was something to do with charging the alternator, which didn't help, so replaced the alternator. Seems to be better now, but may have fried a second battery while driving it to the mechanic. Not sure what fuse they mean...

Yeah it's possible the alternator has come under stress from the previous battery dying and creating a charge load, possibly combined with age, dirt, moisture and an unhealthy grounding. I'll get the auto elec to checkout the alternator and see if it's busted. I still don't know why the battery...
