Here is a way to test solenoid switching w 12v battery rather than checking ohms as someone mentioned. It needs to be a strong click when activated. The video shows one weak solenoid for comparison.

I just had this happen on an 2001 LX470 at 255k mi. It was a leak in the brake line that caused the failure, but it was very sudden. Unfortunately, now that the brake line is repaired, the power brake module or booster now seems to be damaged and those are not cheap.

Thanks to everyone for the replies and helpful links. The first one looks like a match but its in UK unfortunately (5k in US dollars which is what I was getting quoted for reman engines). I'll check it out.

Toyota wasn't willing to consider the newer GX engine as a replacement option, but I don't see why the newer and more reliable engine with some modifications isn't possible.
