Glad you got it figured out, it will be a lesson you will never forget!
I've learned so much from this post and It has encouraged me to take another crack at my FJ40 which I put in storage after I couldn't figure out why it won't run right and or not run at all (distributor issues I'm...
I put a front wheel disk master on a 4 wheel drum system and I can't remember what I did about a valve. I don't think I have ever had problems with my front brakes sticking.
Do you know if the front end bearings have ever been gone through? I need to rebuild mine but haven't had the time.
Well I don't know if that means anything but at least it's SOMETHING!
Another test you could do is remove the front driveshaft and see if that makes any difference. Then put the front driveshaft back in and remove the rear to see if it makes any difference driving around on the front wheels...
That's something that I hadn't thought of, from the video It looks like it has the stock exhaust manifold.
Not sure if it would cause excessive back pressure but every one of these valves I've seen is stuck or rotted out.
I wonder how many engine's it took to cobble this thing together! Did the head part number change from the F to the f1.5? My f1.5s head is also 60051
Another thing I thought of: did you ever check the fluid in the transmission/diff? I've seen oil turn into tar and I'd imagine that would take up...
I don't remember if my F1.5 had domed or flat pistons but from this pic I think it had flat:
And yes that is not the correct head gasket but I couldn't find a good f1.5 specific head gasket anymore. Keep that in mind! Don't pull the head unless you absolutely have too!
I guess the Saga continues...
I hate to repeat this but I'd say keep bumping up (advancing) the timing until you get the performance you want. I know It says 7 degrees in the book but remember that is with new gears and tight bearings and bushings, usually once an engine gets broken in it the...
Again correct me if I'm wrong but I believe all the PVC valve does on this set up is it acts as a one way check valve. You should be able to suck air out of the breather pipe but not blow back. If it leaks a bit I don't see how it would be that much of a concern, I think its mainly for back fire.
You can see that same line in my PFP on my 74, it restricts a bit when it goes into the intake to carb adapter. If your engine is all sealed up and the line is good It shouldn't cause a problem.
Any valve that I would imagine would just be in case of backfire and shouldn't really cause any sort...
The Carb on my garden tractor looks bigger than that lol. Definitely make sure all the gaskets and such are tight and the studs are good, lots of points it could leak.
Reminds me of a similar story I heard about a Ford 300 with the one barrel carb; The guy had just bought the truck and it was...
Here is what the book says but it's older and probably not directly applicable.
I don't think your dizzy has an "octane adjustment" but the "ping" adjustment that I put a box around is pretty general for all engines. To understand the feeling of timing adjustment you really ought to drive an...
I'm not sure when they added catalytic converters to FJ40s but if its an original exhaust system (I highly doubt that it is) then it could be plugged up.
From the video it sounds like the timing could be a bit late/lazy sounding. Set the points and then loosen the bottom bolt on the dizzy and...
They are designed to spin, it makes sure everything wears evenly on a flat tappet engine. Hopefully this picture illustrates WHY they spin:
Note: This is exaggerated, you usually cannot see or feel the slight angle they put Into the camshaft.
I know transfer case ratios changed over the years but with mine in Lo, 4th was the only usable gear on the road. I maybe got it over 25 once in Lo but the gear noise and jerkiness was so great that I don't see how anyone could drive around for very long without realizing there was a problem...
Don't know why it took me so long to find this one! That homemade power hammer is awesome! Everyone's setup looks great!
My brother is the one who got really into it and built our setup and so I'm not very familiar with using it. I mainly use it for rivets or heating something up when it's...
