Sorry for the delay. I spent my weekend putting a new furnace in the house and didn't have daylight to check this out. What you're describing is not at all what is happening. No idea why it looks like this in the pictures, and I'm having a hard time getting a picture that doesn't look this...

It does have diff locks, as noted in the title. They work smoothly, locking and unlocking.

Here is the area cleaned up. The white is a sealant. No cracks in the metal. What your seeing is the paint lifting.

I do have some actually. And just to clarify, it is sprayed with Woolwax with black tint. It's a lanolin based product, similar to Fluid Film, which is made specifically for this application.
