In many ways this is excellent news! I would be the starter than EEC or some random shorts in the wiring etc. I replaced my alternator like you while changing the belt pulleys while you’re there. Should saved the old alternator as perfectly good. But it happens unless it’s new so is the starter...

When you turn the key and experience the no crank and no start condition. Is there an engine check light ? In other words the check engine light always on until the engine is running, in your case was the engine check light there?
