While performing some routine tailgate maintenance the other day, I noticed the remains of a rubber bushing in each of the hinges. Toyota discontinued 'em (Part#90386-12002).

1) Do I really need those bushings?

B) What could I use instead of official Toyota bushings?

Shrink-wrap tubing.

I'd drill out the tailgate mount a litte larger to accept a press fit bronze bushing. Use a little anti-seize there too. That's what I'm doing on mine & also my door hinges.

HAve you done this on any yet?

Are you afraid about removing material and causing the hinge to fail?

I got my bushings pressed in yesterday. The fitment is great on both inside and outside diameter. Pics to come.

The only issue I have is that the outer lip of the flange is not as wide as the original plastic, but this seems mostly superficial as the real work is done in the part of the bushing.
