Got some pics from John at SD Trux last night that clearly show the crack in the head and one pic of the head out of the truck. Notice the black lines between the bolt hole on the left and the allen head. The old head is off to the machine shop to remove the valves (I think).

John is being gracious enough to send me pics of the progress! Gotta love it!

He said the block looked fine!:clap::clap:

That certainly gives peace of mind when you can put your eyes on the problem.

Hope it all goes together well for another 200K miles.

Dan.

Thanks for the update. I hope if this ever happens to me i can afford to toss in a diesel. Im allowed to dream right?

Do you have a Miata to sell? That might cover it!

Ken Kemsa is still trying to sell the half chop Toyota Diesel Dave. Engine, tranny and transfer case along with all the necessary goodies in the engine bay. Only $13K, plus the install and anything else you'd need.

Got a guy calling back today from Thousand Oaks to arrange for some time next week when I'm off to come down and see/drive the Miata. He was very interested given the low miles on the car. Got my fingers crossed!

I'll only net about $7K on the sale of the Miata. I still owe on it. Even the asking price if owned free and clear wouldn't cover a diesel swap!

That sucks! I feel your pain. My head cracked too about 1 year ago. It was only 11,000 miles after the PO had the HG done at a Toyota dealership. By the time I owned it & it cracked, their service warranty had expired. D'oh.

$2,800 bucks later I had a used rebuilt head installed plus PHH and some other PM done.

Good luck with yours.

YES! Got tomorrow afternoon off! John called and the beast is finished and I can go pick her up. Can't wait!!!!!

ME TOO!!!

New cylinder head and all associated gaskets and parts. Reused the valves.
New throttle cable - John mentioned the 16 year old one was sticky so while we're in there....
New idler bearing and belts.
Fixed oil leak.

Is it time to go to San Diego yet?? :steer:

Right on!! Have fun driving it home!

whew!

Congradulations. That is a tough pill to swallow but it's over now. I just noticed that you have well over 7k posts, how long have you been here/had a cruiser?

TTT

Brent is probably stuck in traffic on his way back from the shop.

Either that or the truck runs so well that he is taking the long way home and enjoying being back in the Cruiser!!

Well...John called before we left. He started it up again today and the lean idle misfire resurfaced, so he wanted to keep it longer. He's as frustrated as I've been over the past year. He's tested just about everything. His son owns a '94 so they're going to swap out the VAF to be sure that the used unmolested one I picked up isn't defective. My original tampered one is useless and his son's will eliminate the VAF. He'll also swap the ECU to see if that's the problem. He was going to test the fuel pump to be sure the fuel pressure is ok. Still runs great as speed. It's just the idle. Only other item is the darn little fuel filter sock in the fuel tank that could be real gunky after 16 years. We've already changed the fuel filter in the engine bay.

He's literally tested just about everything and because it's OBD1, the engine management system really can't tell him much and it still won't throw a code on anything. Frustrating! John's communication and descriptions have been nothing short of great and he prides himself and his shop on the quality of their work. I've got no complaints, just kudos and compliments for the way he's handled this.

LOL - Original owner of this cruiser. Bought it new in August, 1994. Here since Woody adopted us from the old SOR forum IIRC. Whatever it was, it was closing down and Woody adopted us and the archives there. That was years ago tho!
