Sorry the reunion has been postponed Brent.

Me too! :crybaby::crybaby::crybaby:

I was really looking forward to getting her back. Just as well. We both want it right before I go get it and John didn't want to give it back w/o figuring out the misfire.

Wasn't the misfire the deal that started this whole saga?

Yep, that and still loosing a little coolant. Cylinder head was found cracked. We dont know if that had happened before or after I'd had the HG replaced last January or not. No way to prove that.

They have spent hours chasing the misfire. Mystery unsolved to this point but it's been doing it ever since the first HG, but never before. It's misfired both with the tampered VAF and the used one. Rich out the mixture with the VAF enough and the misfire goes away, but we shouldn't have to do that.

I just hope it's not the ECU. Those damn things are EXPENSIVE. I know a lot of wires are stuffed thru the grommet where the wiring harness to the ECU feeds out to the engine bay with all the light wiring on the roof rack. I suppose an ECU wire in the harness could be exposed, but I'm just speculating on that. Harness looked good on inspection by John as they've been working on her.

I have a 94 ECU for a spare. Let me know if you need it.

Damn dude, all this money you could of had a rebuilt motor with all new electronics by now! Sheesh!

Has anyone checked the downpipe behind the EGR? In many cases this is where a short occurs do to melting harness.

I have a spare ECU too Brent. It's one that will leave you stranded (the bad version Toyota made) but it will at least let you know if the misfire goes away. You're more than welcome to borrow it. I carry it as a spare.

Doubt a complete rebuild unless you include the original $2500 for the HG job last January.

John's son owns a '94 and he's going to 'borrow' it Monday to swap out the ECU and the VAF to potentially eliminate those as the cause.

They and I have inspected the wiring harness behind the EGR tube. It 'looks' fine. It's one of the first things from post suggestions in the 80's section that I did too. Grabbed the harness behind the EGR tube and moved/shaked it a lot to see if it would cause a misfire. Didn't. I suppose $385 and a few hours of labor to put a new harness in is peanuts at this point...

Ignition coil is fine. I suppose it still could be the distributor or the plug wires too.

I doubt it's the used VAF I picked up from a mud member since it was misfiring before installing it unless you really turned the original VAF the first shop messed with richer. It's still misfiring with a factory sealed VAF. It's a quick swap out tho for SD Trux to do.

Don't know how easy that ECU is to unplug and swap out under the dash tho.

At least John said he'd trust the truck out in the middle of nowhere right now. She runs real strong.

Suppose it could be that stupid little sock filter in the fuel tank. We put in a new fuel filter in the engine bay.

So frustrating. It seems to be just at idle. :hhmm::hhmm::hhmm::confused:

Changing the ECU is about a 10 minute job. Extremely easy.

Ah man sorry to hear of all the frustration to say the least!! But at least you took it to a quality mechanic willing to weed out he issues... I'm sure others would have just band-aided it and passed it back..

I MISS MY TRUCK. :crybaby::crybaby::crybaby:

Swap test on the ECU, Distributor and VAF failed to solve the misfire Monday.

I think the only things not changed or swapped are the wiring harnesses. They've certainly been inspected for damage enough tho. We may not have tested/changed out the plug wires, but they were new August, '09. I think SD Trux is getting as perplexed as I've been and as doggedly determined to find the cause as ever. Go John Go! :cheers:

you never said what the fuel pressure was like... pulling the pump is quick as there is a access door in the floor....

good luck...fuel or ignition...sounds simple uhhh....can be a pain in the @#$%

btw.. double check and clean the grounds...on the motor and body even a loose one will cause weird stuff...watched a good freind who is a great wrench work on a car for 2 days for it to be a loose ground hidden on the back of the block..it missfired when cold, (brand new gm car)...

RAYJOH,

See here https://forum.ih8mud.com/ca-socal-80s/449842-sd-trux-rocks.html

It was a ground of sorts - ground wire from rear bank of fuel injectors to the ECU had an exposed sheathing causing a ground. That caused too much fuel to dump into the 2-6-4 back cylinders and as a result the truck was trying to lean itself out causing the lean misfire in the 1-5-3!

This wire was right next to a pinched wire to a coolant temp sensor SD Trux found on initial inspection. Both had to have been caused by the first shop on the initial HG job, but I can't prove it. All I can say is that the engine purrs now like it always has. New oil crank seal, so no more small oil leak, new throttle cable and new idler pulley that rids the engine of the annoying squeak with the belts..
