After the HJ60 got sold it was time for a new project. Here it is:

Locked clean 1996 80 series Cruiser,
Fully rebuilt 1HD-T (4.2L 6cyl Toyota turbo diesel)
H151F 5 speed manual transmission, fully rebuilt
HF1A part time transfer case, fully rebuilt.

First the acknowledgements:
The engine was rebuilt valve cover to oil pan by Chris Lynch (lynchmob on mud). He was a pure pleasure to deal with and deserves the highest recommendations.

The transmission and transfer rebuild kits and some synchro rings came from 4 Wheel Auto in Edmonton-great vendors.

Dave at Japan 4x4 and Radd Cruisers provided other hard to come by parts, such as the triple synchro rings in the H151F.

The turbo , injection pump and injectors were fully rebuilt by Brian at Omega Fuel Injection in El Cajon, California.

All the work was performed at the shop of West Coast Cruisers (westcoastcruisers.com) in California. Michael, the owner, is one of my best friends and without him this would not have happened. Check out the website (shop projects) for more pictures and other Toyota Diesel builds.

Here are some pictures:
The truck (1996 80 series, locked) got a OME heavy duty 2 inch suspension lift with Dobinson shocks.

Some things to come...

That's it for now.
In the very near future the truck will get:

80 series auxiliary 13 gallon fuel tank

Toyota factory snorkel

Wagon gear tailgate lid

Rear bumper/tire/jerrycan/tool carrier.

Then off to Baja, with 22mpg...

Impressive. I'll be the first to ask, how do the costs break down?

Any concerns about it passing emissions?

There is no other way of saying this-this was not cheap. To claim I am doing this for fuel economy and saving would be a joke. It is a fun project, a hobby and great to have the diesel economy and range for long Baja and central/south America trips.
I am hesitant to throw the price tag out here on the forum. PM me...

cheers,
jan

:clap::clap: wow.... just wow !!!

Too cool...

this is a nice build to begin with but being in California takes likely more work and commitment from the owner than someone up here in Canada which i feel makes it even more impressive. Well done

I must ask. What were the motives for the transmission choice over a H55F? you already put out the cost of all this work and doing it right. I wonder how much it would have drove up the price to source a bell housing

The engine came mated to the H151F. It is a pretty amazing transmission, and comparing the two side by side, I see no particular advantage of either. The R151 is a little lighter duty, but the H version is beefy.
The cost of the bellhousing would have been marginal...
cheers,
