This was posted on another forum I frequent, thought I'd post it here for you guys to enjoy. :D

A fellow Scouter posted this stuff up on Pirate and I thought I would give it a try.

It can be found a Lowes and Home Depot. At the Clinton Lowes it was by the roofing supplies. Basically this is a type of flashing but my guess is it is probably about the same stuff as Dynamat at a very small fraction of the price. Behold......PEEL AND SEAL

So the Scout has had bad heat problems on the floorboard since we back halfed it. The exhaust is almost right up against the floor in a couple spots. Above the muffler is the worst. We melted a back pack in Moab that my brother was pissed about. I did fab up a heat shield after that which helped a ton so Im hoping this finishes the job.

I started off by coating some of the panels off my tranny tunnel. I coated the backside of one and put it in the sun. I put a uncoated piece of metal right next to it. 20 minutes later I picked them up. The one without the mat on it was to hot to hold. The one with the mat actually felt cool to the touch on the other side! That got me excited so I went to town on putting it everywhere I could underneath. I wish I would have known about this before I welded all the floor down.

It also makes a very excellennt sound deadener like the dynamat. You can tell a huge difference in hitting one piece of floorboard that doesnt have it then hitting a piece with it. Im impressed!

The stuff is super sticky and probably will never ever come off. It is aluminum on the outside and it looks like vulcanized rubber on the other side to make it sticky.

The roll is 6 inches by 25 feet and costs 15 bucks!!!

I used a whole roll to do my tunnel and above the muffler and most of the exhaust. Im planning on wheeling next weeking so I will report if I could tell a difference in sound and in heat.

I should have took more pics but I got all excited and forgot.

This is one panel on the tunnel. I sprayed a quick coat of paint on it because it had been left bare and was rusty. After putting it on I tried to pull it back off just for fun. That wasnt happening.

Keep this in mind for your next project

I've heard about peel n seal a long time ago, but have never seen it. Certainly looks like it is a good alternative.

It's got good reviews so far, also posted on Pirate.

Lane-

Thanks for sharing! This looks a good alternative to DM. How thick is this product?

I'm not sure, though the guy who originally posted said it's VERY similar to DM and works just as good.

Also, FWIW, the roll in the original post is 6"x25' and cost $15. That's 12.5 square feet for $15!! Compare to DM's 4 square feet for $100...

Peel and Seel does work as an effective mass damper. However, it has a high asphalt content and not near the adhesive quality. It would work for the exterior, but I would never use it on the interior. I heard it turns into a real big mess. A good quality audio mat like second skin, RAAMat, DynaMat Extreme, etc. are a butyl material versus asphalt. The asphalt mats don't like the extreme temperatures that our cars see. Sound Deadener Showdown is a good site for products and info too. They used to have a big write up on all different mats and the pros and cons of each.

I have never used edead from elemental designs, but it also butyl based and the cheapest of the bunch at 1 buck a foot.

asphalt has been used on roof tops for decades, often black in color. I don't see a big difference in operating conditions between the two.

Agreed. If there is some good reason to avoid it, I wonder how something like Grace Ice Shield/flashing would work, it is a butyl product, I think.

Peel and Seal is a roofing product, so I don't have any doubts that it will work in my truck. Planning on getting a few rolls this week...

I don't feel like getting raped for Dynamat anyway... Though that e-dead stuff looks pretty good.

There is a huge difference in operating conditions between a roof top and an automobile. I am trying to inform people so they can avoid making ignorant mistakes. Please read the link below. It contains some good facts on the differences between butyl and asphalt mats. Many people have used peel and seal type products and would never use it again. Don or Rudeboy on Diymobileaudio used to have great product tests and comparisons at sound deadener showdown, but now he just sells products. It is cheaper and more effective to use less of a good quality butyl mat than more of an ashalt mat.

Home depot "dynamat" for real this time? - DIY Mobile Audio

If you use Peel and Seal on the roof, the stuff may come loose during extreme summer heat and cause serious heart ache. I used some on the cargo floor and the rear wheel well for some cheap sound insulation but wouldn't even think about using it on the ceiling! My .02 cents.
