New Ih8mud member here, commence the hazing!
Just wanted to introduce myself. I'm a cruiserhead (owned an FJ40, FJ45, and FJ62) who recently bought a 1985 4x4 dually toyota RV after a 2 year search--and missing the Yota mystique after 3 years in a 4x4 ford van. It is sweet. Look forward to wasting a lot of time here--and learning something too!
Some of my long-term plans include beefing up the drivetrain and dropping in a diesel as funds permit.

YOu know whats funny? I used the exact same title for my first post, and then, i had an epiphany, and i watned more! And now I have tons of useless information stored in my head, and it randomly appears. But it really does help...

we do like pictures, and lots of em'.

:flipoff2:

You know what sucks boys? That thing probably has a full-floater axle in the rear.

Best. Idea. Ever.

Every time I see a Toyota Camper driving down the road, I just can't help myself from thinking "that would be awesome with a 1KZ-TE."

Just to reiterate: That would be awesome with a 1KZ-TE.

Also, more pictures please. Was that a factory thing? I've never seen a 4x4 camper. That is wicked cool.

Dan

that thing is nice hope you enjoy it first thing i would do is upgrade to slotted rotors and hope it stops when going down hill on dirt road. :flipoff2:. it remids me of a rig i had

But it said my quota was exceeded??

Thanks for the comments.
yeah it ougtta be clean, 1985 with only 58K miles!
yep full float rear, a necessity on these rigs.
yes, factory 4x4, from my research there were only about 30 4x4 sunraders ever built--took me 2 years to find one.
I'm all over the diesel idea, just don't have the ability to do it meself...

Care to share the model number with us? Should be something like RN6X-XXXX. I'm curious if I can pull up that rear full-floater in the EPC. Is it a 5 bolt lug or 6 bolt?

I won't be home again till thurs, I'll try to find the model number then. Where would I look for it to be stamped?
It is 6 bolt.

It will probably be on the tag located on the firewall under the hood, right in the middle. Six lug is good. The only other full-floaters I've seen were on 2WD campers and they were 5-lug.

You can only post three per message, but multiple messages can be done.

Check which rear axle you have. There was an overloading problem. You will need to google to find exact details on what the replacement should look like. Toyota made a replacement 1 ton axle but not all were replaced because many of the RV makers went belly up over it before they could afford to replace them all. It was their fault for overloading them in the first place. I think the replacement axle is 6 bolt and will have a center hub that sticks out from the bolt flange face. This is so they could center the rims between the axle bearings. This keeps the axle shaft from flexing and breaking which it will eventually do if overloaded. If the center hub does not stick out from the bolt flange at least a couple inches or you only have 5 bolts I'd bet you don't have it and I'd look for a replacement.

The previous owner replaced the rear axle from the stock 5 lug semi-float to 6-lug full float. Yeah, it's a crucial fix that needed to be done.

Still won't let me post photos, even in this message. Says I've exceeded my quota.

Buy a Silver Star. Especially if you think you might be hanging around awhile.
