I had seen this tailgate in a post by Peter aka "FJ40-GARAGE" and wanted to find out more about it.

They are fiberglass and made by a guy named Christian Weiss. He has been in buisness for over 20 years. Seems like a really nice fellow...love the name...thats a different story :)

I wanted to find out if he has done buisness over here in the states.

He does sell to the states and would send them to you without any problems and would use DHL for it.

He has no dealer in the US yet...:hhmm:

The price is the one stated on his webpage.
175 Euros minus 19% German Sales Tax = 141.75 Euros
141.75 Euros = 221.79 $ + Freight 66.00$ = 287.79$
+ whatever your tax/customs may charge you.:meh:

His website is:

WEISS-DESIGN Kunststofftechnik

His contact info is as follows:

Tel. + 49 991 28234
email: cw@weiss-design.de

he has more Toyota stuff:

Thank You Peter for helping out with finding out more about this tailgate...I am in a big slump for funds to buy one now....but....I thought somebody would love to get this themselves...maybe even be a dealer :hhmm:

I'll post some more pics of the tailgate in a minute.

I have no affiliation with Mr. Weiss...just found out this info and thought I would pass it along.

Great info. Looks like a top notch tub, and parts...

whats up with the seatbacks changing colors in every picture?

Howdy! I'm seein 3 different colors. I'd bet they were originally green, primered to gray, and finished in red to match the truck. The pics are not in proper chronological order. John

Close......
They used to be grey and one got meangreen painted to upset the people reading the forum.... in the end the owner wanted them to be red matching the rig.

BTW: If someone needs help with a translation or if a phonecall with Mr.Weiss seems to be necessary, send me a PM.

What are you talking about? They're are the same color in every picture.

You guys stink! I was hoping thecrazygreek would think something was wrong with his eyes.

o god that was my laugh for the day.. very sweet if I ever need a tailgate i'll prob head in this direction.

holy hell, those are AWSOME, there's an old toyota pickup in the local junk yard that i was debating buying the tailgate and making it work with a fj because of the toyota logo. I love the old school logo, will definetely put it on the want list but what about the mounting hardware??

I think a tailgate should be made of metal. The form was well made though.

You know it is a beautiful piece and all, but 300 clams for half a square yard of fiberglass is... shall we say... not in my immediate plans.

It has motivated me though, because honestly, that hatch looks terrific.

I saw another member make an awesome tailgate out of plywood, and it got me thinking:

Get some luanne plywood (however you spell it).

Get some Toyota letter stencils and cut the letters out of the luanne.

Use the same luanne to to make a border.

Router all the edges at maybe 60 degrees.

Stain everything.

Paste it all onto a plywood 3/4 inch board.

Finish with serious urethane.

Sand to a gloss finish and you have one beautiful "woody" type rear hatch.

I have decided that this exact project will be my Summer project next year. This and "woody" doors.

Best,

T

Too little too late...bought a truck with a wooden tailgate like that, threw it away.

You could also go the wood route, then laminate with glass, and have a decent piece.

One thing to keep in mind is the rounded corners on this are for the 79 and later FJ40. Probably have small holes in the corners on earlier models. I would think about one of these for an FJ25 soft top model since the spare tire mounts on the side so the whole word Toyota would show. But I would hate to replace a steel tailgate with one made out of fiberglass. Still a very nice looking tailgate.
