Alright I'm probably screwed but that's okay. I took down the oil pan on my Pig (76 FJ40 2F) due to a stuck pressure relief valve. That's not a big deal have one on the way. Although I went to clean out the oil pan and get the gasket off and noticed some shavings on the front ledge of the oil pan. The largest of the shavings is about an inch long and an 1/8th of an inch wide, and then there's about a half a dozen other smaller pieces. So all those wiser than me please give me my options on where these may have come from...... I'll say first off from what I can see in the Piston walls they look clean and smooth. Other than that I'm not real sure. HELP...

I really wanted to have this engine running this weekend but I wanted to make sure I wasn't gonna F things up worse.

Do the metal pieces stick to a magnet?

Any chance you can post up pictures of these pieces of metal?

I'll try and get some pictures of the pieces in the next couple of days. Have to get my hands on a digital camera.

ok just went to the fridge and the pieces are not magnetic. What does this tell me? Aluminum? Dumb questions where from. Been a long time since I've been in an engine.

There are some pretty decent sized pieces for it to be parts of an old fuel pump gasket. Also forgot to mention there are a bunch of smaller pieces that I didn't fish out yet these are no bigger than the tip of a set of needle nose pliers and then there's a decent amount of dust.

Chunks O fiber camshaft timing gear. out there but...maybe some dumbass stuck a cheap fiber cam gear on there. It did what it was designed to do (blow up). Dumbass, now wiser, replaced with a good gear (sounds like something I'd do). Anyways, maybe think about looking under the timing cover, maybe the gear is still there, working but gettin ready to fail. Or, it could be rubber from the isolation ring of a steel anti acoustic gear.

I did not find chunks of stuff, but did find a lot of this crap in the front of the pan. Never did figure out where it came from. :D

Coolerman Yeah that's what most of it looks like with a metallic shine to it. That's what I saw first because it glistened in the drop light. The bigger pieces were all up on the front of the pan near the front main bearing.

Alright I was talking to the mechanic at work and the pieces are aluminum, I kinda thought so after looking a little closer. He thinks maybe the timing cover. Any thoughts? I'm going to dig a little deeper tomorrow and this weekend if I'm not working. I'll keep you guys posted on what I find.

name that bearing??? The PO "Skip" a member here said that when the oil filter blew he didn't drive it after that. So the question remains ??? Where did it come from???

Okay I'm still looking for ideas from you guys. Is the timing chain cover steal or aluminum? Anyone have pictures of the timing cover off before I take it apart? Was kinda thinking if the timing cover is aluminum and the timing chain is stretched and and it's slapping on the cover that may be where the shavings are coming from. Any other ideas?

I think that OEM timing covers are all pressed steel. Stick a magnet to it and you'll know.

I did a few min ago and it's steel. Damn I was hoping to get more ideas to the (not having to tear the whole engine down) point of me not going insane. Ok it's list time Name everything that's aluminum in the engine. Ready go:

yes i need a camera. I have one terrible pic on my photo bucket and it in post #13 I'll get my hands on a digital this weekend

Mrbinks, trying hard to think otherwise but.....the only aluminum in that motor I can think of is the pistons. Doom and dispair if so SO come on guys any other aluminum thingies in there? Maybe it is bearing material? Could be mistakin for aluminum.
