Engine Oh Sh*t question???

Ugh....

Alright the rod caps are out. Was reading through the site and found what I was missing.

Anyhow. I think I'm starting to get in over my head. Especially since the engine is still in the pig. Really starting to think that the engine needs to come out to do this properly. That and it saves a lot of pain with shimmying in and out from under the cruiser every time I need a different tool. I may have to either build an A-frame or rent a cherry picker. What's the most hassle free method to getting the engine and the transmission apart on one of these? I'm thinking about taking the clutch out while I'm at it, looks a little low on clutch plate.

I'm starting to see some shady sh*t while I'm under the pig looking up the sides of the motor. Header bolts almost all the way out, only two bolts holding the big skid plate up. Stuff like that so I guess it's a good thing that I have been spending so much time on my back under this pig. lol I have almost everything ready to pull the Crank but realized that I need to get the tranny and the crank separated before I get carried away any further. That and I need to get my hands on a couple of bolts to get the small gear off the front of the crank. That and a feeler gauge I'm thinking that those two gears or at least the crank gear will have to be replaced. It looks like it's a bit chewed up. Arg I was hoping this would be a driving project. So much for that.......

:bang:

What does your cam look like from the bottom?

It's a real crap shoot as to what kind of maint a used passed around cruiser will have. I have seen some real crap this week.

All I can say is do it right. Do it once and if you sell it later on at least someone will not curse you.

And right doesn't mean you have to spend a lot of money.

the shaft portion of the harmonic balancer should be fairly smooth. if yours isn't too grooved, you may just be able to touch it up with emery cloth. if it's real bad, look into options of having it machined down and what you'll have to do seal wise (if the seal with still contact).

most of the engine work i've done, i've thought i was in over my head. the great thing about cruiser motors is they are as close to bullet proof as possible. i've done a lot of things that i never would;ve thought would work and it's always turned out fine. go for it. you may just amaze yourself.

What the Troll said MrBinks, I tossed $ 1500 down the hole (HEY, you again Marshall? always glad to find someone else to blame, the more remote the better) going at it the way you are now, Apparently though, you are a quicker learner than I, held on to the dream of an in the bay rebuild much longer than you. And believe it or not, a well rebuilt engine is quite a bit better than the original. Oh and dude, me thinks you owe the hate mud a star, $25 or so.

Hey guys support is good

hey the star is something that i will be investing in soon.

Also the HB may have to be sent to the machine shop with the crank or just replaced. I am starting to think that it is the root of my engine problems. I will get a camera and show you guys very soon. The main and rod bearings get progressively better from front to rear. The front main is in terrible shape as you can see in one of the above pictures. Then as you work back in the engine on the crank they get better and better till you get to the rear main and this bearing looks brand new. I don't know if this is due to a bad HB or if the last person to take this motor apart left out a torque or two or just screwed up else where. Since I am going to go to the trouble of taking the engine out of the truck I intend on pulling the Cam and nearly everything else and replacing as needed. I've sucome to the fact that this isn't going to be a driving project for at least a few months. Though I'd rather have something that is in good condition and I know it because I made it that way and know that I can drive it without worrying about something not being put together right inside the heart of the beast. Well I have to be up crazy early tomorrow and since I'm in a hotel business center I'm gonna head out for now.
