my guess would be bearing material. unfortunately, i can't view photos linked from a photo hosting website at work....the engineers who created websense should be shot.

???

Hey guys well the plan is to borrow the bosses camera this weekend and start at the bottom and begin taking things apart to try and find the problem. Although I'm starting to think Piston more and more due to the pieces being so big. I can't imagine a bearing being able to give off such large pieces. ???

:bang::bang::bang:

Here is the pic that was posted for the fragments. These appear to be large and don't appear to be melted looking like extruded bearing material.

I have no idea unless it is piston skirt or exploded oil pump housing?

The old oil pump housing is cast the new one that I got from Dave-T is aluminum. This pump lays in waiting on the work bench. I have and can turn the crank and the motor sounds like it has great compression. I intend on doing this tomorrow morning to check the skirts on each of the pistons. Hey any chance the water pump might be to blame? It's the only other thing that is aluminum that my boss and I can think of. I would go do it tonight and was planning on it but I had a little accident at work today. I hit my right thumb with at 4lb sledge while making up a flange on a high pressure gas well. The bad thing is the company man was only like 10 feet away so I couldn't do anything but bite my tongue and act like nothing happened. I couldn't hold the hammer or the wrench in that hand for almost 15 min. I don't advise anyone doing this. lol

Should hope not

If pieces of your water pump have made it into your oil pan, then you do have some serious problems. I am definately no engine expert but I do know that oil and water don't mix.

No don't worry it didn't sound bad I'm glad you reminded me of how dumb that actually was. Oops. No big deal it's always helpful. I'm really getting to thing it's a piston skirt. Such is life.

Thems looks like bearing pieces to me.
Sh*t, you got the pan off already, why not take off a couple rodcaps and have a look see? Maybe a main cap?

got Pics front main

The first couple of pics are the view while the front main is still on and you can see the little oil hole where there are pieces of the (what was thought to be aluminum) The other pics are of the main bearing halves.

Not sure if this is part of the problem?

thought I'd do a little Paint shop for this question since we all know how important pictures are.

the crank looks like it's in pretty good shape considering all the pieces and fragments on the bearing. It's not perfectly smooth but there aren't any ridges or deep pits either.

Today

Well today was a fun filled day in the garage. Well it's looking like I'm going to have to get the crank turned and get the harmonic balancer turned. Had to go buy a puller to get the HB off. The gear on the Crank looks like it may have been picking up pieces of the main bearing and it's a bit chewed up don't know if it's from this or just normal wear and tear on the motor. (200,000+/- miles) there should be some wear and tear on engine parts. I have to say though the back of the pig makes a great parts place. :) I plan on getting the crank down tomorrow and getting a better look at it. Being as it's memorial day weekend I probably won't be able to have a machine shop look at it until say Wednesday. (will be working out of town Tuesday)

Enough chit chat.

What's the deal with the gear on the crank does it have to come off before pulling the crank shaft or and it just be slid through the hole in the housing? All of this is a lot of fun with the engine still in the truck.

If I have to have the crank and the Harmonic Balancer turned what am I looking at $$$ wise. Never had it done so I was hoping to get some ideas so I don't get ripped off.

Not pulling the pistons? Actually, that plays to my Landcruiser maintaince theory, "if you don't look it aint broke theory". To remove the crankshaft you will have to do either one or the other. Remove that front plate (Hassle) or pull the crankshaft mounted timing gear. To pull the gear you will need two long 8 X 1.25 mm bolts to work with a gear puller, the bolts fit into the holes on the gear (all this was threaded with pics in the last couple weeks, right here on 40 tech, just wish I could remember where). Turn the H balancer? Are you worried about the grooves on the outside of the pulley? If so, a speedy sleeve will fix that. Regrind costs? maybe $ 400 or so counting new bearings, rods and mains so $ 100 range on a regrind.

H Balancer

I wasn't sure if the shinny part of the HB was supposed to be smooth or if it mattered. Pic of shinny part on HB
Also the holes didn't have bolts in them and who knows how long they have been that way, easy fix though.

WTF

:bang: Okay the last engine that I worked on the rod caps on the Crank just came right off. These damn things aren't budging. Help anyone. BTW engine is still in the cruiser. I don't have the facilities to pull it. So yes I'm doing this the hard way.
