I've been meaning to update my OEM lightbulbs for awhile and I came across twentyocho recent update that spurred me to pull the trigger and replace the full set of bulbs: driving lights (H1) , high beams (9005), and fogs (H3).

Note that the bulb types are specific to an '06 LX470. Some earlier year LX's may use different types and the LC100's definitely uses different types.

After an exhausted search, looking for the best balance of value, light output, and longevity, I settled on the Philips Vision Plus bulbs. These promised 60% more light output along with a wider beam pattern. There is the Philips x-treme version that promised a bit more light output, but at a longevity compromise so I settled on these. An easy $60 later all said and done on Amazon...

Onto the comparo. A picture says a thousand words, so here's two:

Low beam w/ fogs

High beams w/ driving lights
p1620502540-6.jpg

These pics were taken with the camera in complete manual mode (fixed shutter/aperature/ISO/WB/etc.) so the relative outputs and color temperature are fair comparisons. What I wanted was more light output, not a cooler/bluer light that a lot of aftermarket bulbs do instead. The histograms tell the tale with the Philips bulbs pumping out a good amount more light across the spectrum as promised.

Driving impressions reflect this. The light quality is both whiter and brighter, with a wider coverage area. I've always believed and wanted for the LX to have HIDs. This upgrade doesn't have me longing for that anymore and I am satisfied.

Now I just need to mod it so I can run the all 3 light pairs at once, instead of the high beams shutting down the fogs - https://forum.ih8mud.com/100-series-cruisers/707276-finally-did-pin-17-mod.html I might be satisfied enough that I don't need aftermarket auxillary lights after this.

Thanks for taking the time to post your results. Glad it worked out the way you wanted. The high beam/foglight mod is easy to do. Just follow the simple instructions. Takes less than 30 mins and you'll be pleased with the results.

If you are wanting to stay with the OEM projector, I would advise a clear lens swap and a H1 HID setup. The Koito Projectors used in the LX are very similar to the AP1 S2000 projectors which is still one of the best projectors on the market. The only difference is a change in the bowl radius and the H1 bulb holder vs D2S. Please be aware that the LX projector is not very large, not does it handle heat very well. Halogens run much hotter than HID's, so as you increase the wattage of the bulb, you also drastically shorten the projectors life by burning the chrome off the inside.

The TSX lens will give you a huge improvement in light dispersion throughout the beam, it eliminates hotspots and reduces glare to almost zero.

I have done a few clear lens swaps for MUD members and the results are incredible.

I wanted a quick and easy upgrade without tearing into the light fixture. Though I can be persuaded to do certain mods if they prove to be worthwhile.

What do you mean by a clear lens swap? Is this a modification, or truly a lens swap with another projector?

The lens swap is not difficult, it's just time consuming for the first time. You will need to open the headlights and remove the shroud. Once the headlight is bare you unscrew the lens retainer and change out the lens. I'd advise blocking the squirrel finders, the clear lens make them huge rectangles.

You will need to space out the TSX lens 2mm, and use a o-ring to secure the lens. I would say 2-3 hours for the job. As always, the first headlight will take the longest.

Here are some pictures of the journey. I'm not forcing you to do this, but it is the easiest way to drastically improve the low beams without cutting the projector out and replacing it. That takes about 20 hours for both headlights.

Have to give you props for the extremely clean and sanitary mod you did there.

I've done my fair share of cracking open headlight lenses on a couple previous vehicles and I'm not looking to do the same ATM for this car. But thanks for presenting the option. If I feel like I need more light in the future, I will reconsider.

I have been happy with the Philips Vision Plus - glad to see the photos for the difference. Powerbulbs in UK was my source.

I think you need to provide links to the parts that are needed to complete this project!

Where did you purchase the Phillips bulbs? The Toyota part number is the same for a '98 Lx (so presumably all LX years). I don't do a lot of night driving, but after driving my kid home tonight, I need some improvement on the low beam. I don't want to modify the headlamp assembly and I'm happy with the high beam, so if I can get a 25% improvement out of a bulb I'll be happy.

^Nevermind, I re-read the original post today and got the information I believe I need (sorry long day yesterday). I did find a part number chart for aftermarket Lexus bulbs: http://www.lightbulbs4cars.com/lexus bulb guide

If it's accurate:

1998-2004 LX470
Low Beam - H1
High Beam - 9005 / HB3
Fog / Driving Light - H3 (Not sure if this means DRL also)

2005-2007 LX470
Low Beam - 9006 / HB4 (this contradicts what original poster listed as a part number, so not sure if this is accurate, the 9006 bulb has the elbow connection)
High Beam - 9005 / HB3
Fog / Driving Light - H3 (Not sure if this means DRL also)

My Napa doesn't carry Philips VisionPlus bulbs, so I purchased the bulbs from Amazon. I will post the difference in light intensity when I get the new bulbs installed.

Here is the Land Cruiser info (again, if it's accurate): http://www.lightbulbs4cars.com/toyota bulb guide

1998-2007 LC
Low Beam: 9006 / HB4
High Beam: 9005 / HB3
Fog / Driving: 9006 / HB4

You could get to the passenger side bulb and easily determine the bulb type.

Land Cruiser

-Toshiba HIR1 (9011) Head Lamp Bulbs
-Philips HIR2 (9012) Head Lamp Bulbs

modified to fit 9005/9006

Was there a link to a modification to make a different type of bulb fit? I was directed to a PartsGeek page about a water pump.

It's extremely simply to cut/snip/grind off part of one of the three plastic tabs. Heck a lot of people do it with toe nail clippers.

I'm 100% positive that the bulbs that came (and returned to Amazon) from that link were not HIR. If Anthony receives HIR bulbs on his order then I will obviously retract my statement with the caveat, "your HIR mileage will very". Seems a few folks have received standard bulbs like I did.

Just so I'm clear, the bulbs you received did not look like the ones in the link with "HIR" printed on them?

Correct. I already have the HIR2 from Philips and the HIR 1 Toshiba. Around Christmas I ordered a pair of the HIR1 to check them out (upgrade) and when I received them they were not HIR, but halogen. I should have taken a snap of them but it didn't occur to me.

As in your link my current HIR2 Philips have similar nomenclature, made in Germany etc

I hope amazon is sending the right thing then I may reorder.
