The ATRAC clearly has an advantage in the mud and snow from this video. Also LCHardriver's tire selection was much better for this situation. It amazed me with how much ease he made it up the road. We were in a group of 5 rigs and his 02 was the least modified and did the best on the trail. Granted I was blazing the trail and the first one through usually has a tougher time.

Eric,

You blazing the trail made a big difference. You were having to pick the approach, while I was just following and selecting how to get around some of the obstacles that were in the way. I would be interesting for me to try that hill again, but be first in line. BUT, would want you somewhere near with that wench ready to go!:p

You still made it look easy where the rest of struggled.

I agree that the ATRAC did an awesome job. It did make that part of the drive easier.

Would love to see others post how theirs have done on trails too.

Both systems have their plusses and minuses. However there is no denying the rig breaking trail on snow has the most challenging job compared to followers.

seemed like LCH also had a lot less skinny pedal. gineric, could you have improved with less gas and wheel spinning, or did the hill require momentum over traction?

No surprise to me. On several trips, I've seen land rover L3s and later model monteros drive right past triple locked discos and land cruisers.

MY old trooper was locked front and rear with a teralow and swampers or destination MTs.
I will tell you that the land cruiser seems much better capabilities in high traction and low traction situations. I will say that ARBs seem to do better when you're off camber, need to bump up a ledge, or lift a tire.

If I could afford ARBs, they would be in my 3rds right now.

I couldn't have made it any other way. I couldn't get enough traction to keep the momentum going to go slow. The snow was slushy and packing hard with a layer of ice underneath it and below that a layer of slick clay like mud. It took me several attempts to make it up. I wish we could go back with similar tires and do it again. The conditions were not good for BFG ATs. I had a day when the snow conditions were like this in my 80 with brand new BFG ATs, less than 900 miles on them. A week later I had Toyo MTs and was much happier in the snow. It is days like this that I wish I would have kept the MTRs mounted on 100 wheels so I could switch. However, for 98% of the stuff I'm doing with the 100 I'm happier with the ATs. And I still had a wonderful day.

I went up a steep hill/snow climb yesterday just to test the ATRAC. I was very impressed that I made it up without switching anything. I will have to go back and take a picture of what I went up, or do it again as the picture probably wouldn't show how steep it really was. My ATRAC/VSC (??) alarm was going off the whole way up, but the Cruiser just kept climbing...

Great videos. I have had both STTs and have BFG ATs now and I think the STT tires had to really help on this terrain. I will be adding ARB lockers to my 2000 at some point to have the best of both worlds. Would love to see locked vs atrac with exact tires.

Just for clarification, my truck is running STs not STTs. ;)

Ok then ATRAC is da bomb. I suggest removing any and all lockers and sending them to me. I will take care of the rest.

ATRAC is good, lockers are great, having both is best of all :D ATRAC is too slow to do it's thing in a mud run type situation and grinds you to a halt but not having to explain which switches to toggle to the oh if she thinks she might get stuck is nice.

Do you have a switch to bypass your ATRAC?

If you figure it out, DO share with us. What you do may be the solution for bypassing VSC as well. My car doesn't actually have either, but it would be good information to have, considering my parents are thinking of buying another 100, this time a later model with VSC.
