On the HDJ81, how do you replace the fender side turn-signal bulb? Is there a way to pry off the amber bulb cover? I don't want to wreck a 26yo piece of plastic and there is no access from the inside.

My guess is you will have to remove the inner wheel well piece...I never owned a 80 series as of yet just my guess.
 
Get the gas axe out;)
 
I can't recall if you push them forward or back, but there is a springy part to them which can be compressed to pull them from the fender. Worst case they snap that bit and you can get new ones as those are still available from Mr. T. and they are not that expensive.

h it forward slightly (towards the words" Toyota" on the lens), then pry the back side away from the fender. Finger pressure was all I needed, no tools. Now, to find the right LEDS. Pictures for documentation:
