I am in need of a mechanical oil pressure gauge and was curious what the I need to make it work. I'm not looking to go big and am curious what it takes to make it work. What do I need to make a typical parts store gauge work?...

What's wrong with the stock one?

Most aftermarket gauges come as a "kit" with various adapters, some tubing and maybe a mounting plate. You need an adapter to attach the tubing to the oilpressure sender hole, some tubing and a mounting plate. 12 volts and a light is nice if you want to see it at night.

Doh! Missed the 'mechanical' thing.

WAIT A MINUTE.....?????WTF?

The OP's sig does say "complete restore"

I do not have the original cluster in my 40. All my gauges are aftermarket... When I purchased my gauge cluster I bought all of them but the oil pressure gauge. I don't know if I forgot or didn't think I needed one at the time......

there super easy to install. all gauges usually come as a kit with the hose and fittings needed to setup a new gauge. i just did one on my 40 and it took less than 20 min. just takes timeto route the hose. thats if your using a mechanical gauge. if its electrical its even easier.

Go with mechanical. A few fittings and you done. Just make sure you use copper tubing not rubber it will last longer. And I took some extra vac line and ran the tube through it to protect it from anything electrical. Ie the dizzy and wires it runs right by.

Anybody got a photo of how they hooked up at the sender? I would like to hook up a mechincal while also using the stock electrical. Thanks.

I took my Oil Pressure sending unit out at the oil filter mounting plate. 2F, and the new aftermarket gauge came with the right fitting to screw right into it. Copper tubing with the gauge is the way to go. I have had plastic tubing in the past with Chevy's and other and it don't last.

I guess my main question is that the gauge comes with the right fittings out of the box to make it work? I just remove the oil sending unit and it.s good to go? I put one in a wrangler I had years ago but wanted to makw sure the FJ.s disn.t have anything corky going on

I have a cheap sunpro 3 gauge set in mine with mechanical water temp and oil pressure gauges and a voltmeter. On my 79 I just took the stock sender out and the adapter for the mechanical gauge threaded right in. On mine it threads into the end of one of the oil cooler bolts. They are a like a huge banjo bolt. I could probably get another threaded one and hook up the stock gauge too.

I installed a cheap Sunpro mechanical guage when I rebuilt my F.5. Fittings came with kit.

I also ran the copper tube thru some irrigation drip line to protect it.

NAPA sells the fittings you need for the copper tubing. Do not use the 'free, included' plastic tubing, and check any tubing on occasion to be sure it's sound. You don't the addition of a gauge to blow your engine after the tubing cracks and all the oil runs out!

OK, I had an oil leak the other day and took a pic. Ignore the finger pointing at the oil leak...look at the "T" coming out of the base of the oilfilter mount. It's made out of plumbing parts from Ace hardware. One end of the "T" is capped, waiting for a stock oilpressure sender. The other end of the "T" goes to a SS braided line, think it's 1/8th inch, that goes to the oilpressure gauge in the dash.

i keept my stock one but added a mechanical oil psi gage in the engine compartment as a back up/ reference.

The threads that connect the stock oil pressure sending unit are NOT 1/8 NPT they are 1/8 BSPT 28TPI and are not interchangeable. The fittings that come with the manual gauges you get are all NPT. You need to use the correct fitting - see: McMaster-Carr. Just a word of caution here.

I'm having trouble connecting my Oil Pressure sending unit to the Oil Filter bracket port as well.
My gauge kit is from CruiserUser (Kickass Stuff For Your 40-Series). When I looked at AutoMeter website (manufacture of the gauges), it doesn't specify the thread on the sender, but its looks like its 1/8" NPT.
What is the thread size on the bracket? Is it M10x1 (looks like it) or 1/8" BSPT?

AutoMeter has both Oil Pressure adapters:

1/8" NPT to 1/8" BSPT - Product #2269 http://www.autometer.com/cat_accessoriesdetail.aspx?vid=59

1/8" NPT to M10x1 - Product #2265 http://www.autometer.com/cat_accessoriesdetail.aspx?vid=55
