I know it's nearly 30 degrees C here in the Okanagan but I'm trying to install a espar hydronic 5 series(24 volt) in a BJ74. Iv'e got the heater mounted including fuel lines, exhaust, plumbing(only took me 3 days, and why am I doing this) and most of the wiring.Everything works fine,i'm cooking myself out of the cab but I can't figure out how to wire the cab fan motor so it goes on when the the espar heater reaches the desired temperature.Iv'e located the wire from the espar control unit that controls the heater blower and ran it through a relay and am trying to hook it up to the blower in the cab.Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the heater blower, birfields download manuals aren't working.Has anyone installed a espar or webasto heater in a BJ74.I usually work up north and have no use for ac or even in the Okanagan for that matter, much rather have a diesel heater for the rest of year.

Well , I found a schematic of the heater control knob with the ac
dial. The blower is controled with mass not positive  ,that's why i kept blowing fuses. The espar heater works great, sounds like a little jet turbine when it takes off, heats the engine and cab within a few minutes,I imagine 30 min. running time will be enough in the winter.

there are a few of us that have these little babies under the hood. they work GREAT as long as you don't fire up the Wabasto more than twice with out firing up the engine (2 hour cycle). it seems to drain the battery...
i never knew you could hook the heater up to the fan motor though, now that is cool but i suspect that the drain on the battery will be even greater.

I'm not sure how and why but the fan runs at about setting 2 or 3 when it kicks in, hopefully the battery drain won't draw to many amps. With the 24 volt set up and 2 batteries it should be okay.In Germany all the newer diesels are equipped, from the factory with either a espar or webatso heater.I guess if we Canadians had a say in the car industry we would have heaters rather than ac, considering we have maybe 200+ frost free days a year.
I'll see how goes this winter.

hey crushers* i also live in c-town and i was wondering where you got you webasto. should i order or source localy

i used to get mine from Bruce Lowen but this last one i got used...
do a search on the web, there is a couple places in town that sell these and another gent from BC posted up a link for a real good price out there...

This is the company that Wayne is talking about www.cool-it.ca/ . They do have multiple items on Ebay. I went with a lower rad hose heater due to budget5 and am happy for now with it.

Hi Wayne,

I was wondering where did you tap the line for the fuel on the HDJ81. I just picked up an Espar. I think with the Espar it comes with a fuel line stick that goes into the tank itself. I was hoping there's an easier way to do instead of doing it that way. Maybe tap into the line just before the fuel filter? Gonna try to install it on the weekend? If you have any tips or pointers. That would be much appreciated. Thanks

i got the ide from Bruce L, tap in just before the filter down low, right after the steel line stops and the rubber begins...
works for me...

not sure you guys are talking about the same thing? I think waynes is a diesel fired coolany heater and the espar is a diesel cab heater that uses the inside fan to circulate the air? In either case both are pretty neat items IMO

Actually, the espar verison is an inline coolant version (Hydronic D5). I got mine from cool-it for 1134 tax and shipping included. This one also includes the 7 day time which usually a $300 feature. shipping only took 3 business days from Abbostford BC to Edmonton AB.

Hey Wayne,

With the install of the Webasto heater...did u just T into the fuel line just before the Fuel filter right. What did you use for the water/coolant hoses? My unit didn't come with the water hoses. I'm just trying to get all the parts i need together so i don't have to run back and forth to get parts....

Also, I got this little tiny plastic type hose with my heater. I'm assuming thats used for the fuel?

I know your a very busy person but I was wondering if you can take some pics of your setup for the HDJ81. For example: the locations of where i have to tap the hose to? Gonna try to do the install this weekend. I hope i can figure it out. hahha

Anyways, as usual you a big wealth of knowledge when it comes to the Land Cruisers and U are greatly respect here on ih8mud...I just want to say thx for all the help.

Pat

i do beleive i did a full thread on the install complete with pics...
may i suggest a search?
have to run...

From memory. Both Webasto and Espar are available as an air or water heater. I have never installed an Espar but from my experience with the Webasto it goes something like this...

get hose adapters from 3/4 on the Webasto to the 5/8 on the Cruiser.

Simply figure out which way the water is moving through your heater core and plumb the heater in series with it. That will give the fastest cab heat. I have occasionally used the rear heater as well if I am going to sleep in the rig in the winter as the rear fan is quieter and draws less.

I generally put a T in the fuel line in front of the fuel pump on an inline pump and between the filter and pump on a rotary. Be sure to use fuel safe teflon tape on the threaded end of your barbed fittings as the diesel eats some and then you'll get air leaks. Not enough to bother the motor but the Webasto will work sporatically. Use the largest fittings you can get into the factory hose so as not to restrict flow much and adapt as required to the tiny plastic fuel hose for the heater. The heaters filter and fuel pump come next and there is instructions about how to mount them to avoid air traps. I generally take the intake hose and run it as high as I can and then goose neck it down to limit the amount of water I get in there. If you are doing alot of water crossings you should really route it into the airbox but I've never bothered. Water doesn't seem to bother the Webastos as long as they are shut down when you fill them up. Now here is my little secret... Run the flexible exhaust of the heater down and point it at the oilpan of the rig. No sense wasting that heat! The motor is so happy to wake up to warm motor oil.

Sometimes the timer will fit where the factory clock was and that makes for a nice install. Make sure to use the correct bulb in the timer. They generally come with both 12v and 24v in the package and you use the appropriate one for your vehicle.

i have to give credit to Bruce L as well, he helped me when i was stuck with an intermintent running heater... the boy is invaluable but darn quiet most of the time...

Been a bit busy this year, doesn't seem much better on the horizon either. I should just retire I guess.

Thx for the quick write up Bruce and Wayne!!!

I will let everybody know how it goes.

thx again

Any remote control with 1 set of dry contacts would work. If you have lots of money to blow Webasto sells a remote setup for their Blueheat stuff. I picked up a cheapo keyfob light controller from Princess auto for $25 but haven't bothered to hook it up yet. I seem to have lost my Webasto fuel pump in the move.
