I was checking for a exhaust leak. I had occasional exhaust smell in the cabin. I was running a shop vac exhaust up the exhaust. When I got under the hood air was blowing out the bottom EGR port and the hose to the modulator was missing. This is how I found this.

Can't imagine anything in that part of the EGR system would do that. It's all vaccum, correct?

I hate to tell you this, but your rig may have been infested by face-hugging aliens.

Plugged Cats causing backpressure. Has to go somewhere and part of that somewhere is the modulator.
You'd think that would blow off the hose and maybe the modulator cap would come off. This looks like some sort of molten object blew out of it. It's definitely heat related.

I've seen it on other cars of the era with similar EGR systems, they all had clogged cats.

Oh boy. Ok.
