will an 80 series front and rear housings that came with e lockers accept an open 3rd member, in the event of a trail fix or whatever... i.e. i do a pinion, or shear some teeth on the front diff, can i swap in an open 3rd (from the front of a non locked 80) to get me home... will it work on the rear (with a rear 3rd obviously)

Open and Locker third members are not interchangable, the stud pattern is different.

You could modify (add to) the hole pattern (drill the additional holes) on the non-locked third member, so it will fit up to the stud pattern of the locked housing. Keep in mind, the rear right axle shaft is a little shorter on the locked version, so I'm not sure how that would work with the non-locked third member.

I don't see why not, but C-Dan or Christo would know for sure.
