I just put one in my lj78 yesterday, the thing is awesome! Started up perfectly this morning, it works better than i expected. Go get one!

A must for every diesel cruiser in Alberta for sure... Or anywhere in Canada for that matter...:D

okay here we go, first we will do the HZJ77:
remove the air box and the front skid plate.
find a suitable location for the 1 1/2" lower rad hose heater. (auto village part number 300002). this location must allow for straight section on each side of the heater for at least 1 1/4" to secure the hose clamps.
now plug off the rad over flow tube, this restricts the amount of fluid you will loose.
cut the hose on the vehicle (we were replacing the hose so this one shows the new hose on the bench) with at least 1 1/2" chunk removed.
insert the heater allowing for the electrical cord to be able to be fastened away from moving parts (steering rod, fan, belts).
clamp until tight, do not over tighten or you could strip the clamp.
refill the rad with the fluid that came out the bottom after straining it (or this is a good time to install new fluid so DO NOT PLUG THE OVER FLOW TUBE and leave the rad cap off. almost all the coolant will come out)
pressure test the system for leaks to 16 lbs, too much pressure and you could blow a frost plug.
reinstall the air box and skid plate (REMOVE THE PLUG FROM THE OVER FLOW HOSE AND REATTACH.)
done

now for the LJ78:
remove the air cleaner
look down and realise you are now working on a LJ78 and not the HZJ77.
reinstall the airbox.
dummy

start again on the proper side.
remove battery and tray and over flow bottle.
clamp the hoses lightly and plug the radiator over flow tube to restrict the coolant loss
cut the hose in an appropriate spot to allow you to remove 1 1/2" of the hose but still have 1 1/4" on each side to clamp the heater in.
insert the 1 1/4" lower rad hose heater, allowing for the cord to be run away from all moving parts (fan, belts etc)
the direction of the heater is irrelavant since it is a convection heater.
top up the rad and pressure test the system for leaks to 16 lbs
reinstall the battery, tray and over flow bottle and reattach the over flow tube.
done

install the 1 1/4" lower rad hose heater...

The only difference I had ,was I needed a 1 1/2 " heater. I bought a 1 1/4 wich was to small, swapped up to the 1 1/2", was a little snug but fit great. The whole process was almost to easy.

Just installed it tonight, so we'll see the results tomorrow.

Bring on the Snow.

Just a follow-up on this forum,

Has anyone tried this install on the LJ78 and what were the results? What were the temperatures outside that you were starting in?

Also, has anyone tried to install the rad hose heater in a different location?

Finally, what type of lower rad hose heater did you use?

Thanks

i installed them in at least a dozen LJ78/71 series with very good results.
starting down to -32C in Calgary.

you need to install the heater as low as realisticly possible...
