Hi all, I have watching for a while now you guys restoring 55,s and seeing them coming back to life. I thought I would like to add my pig to the mix as well.
I guess a little history should be added to make it more interesting.
Maybe 15 years ago I remember seeing an old Ford Bronco drive by and thought how cool it was and how I liked the square shape. I would have liked to have one but they are quite rare here so was an unrealistic proposition. Fast forward 14years I started looking for another alternative and decided on buying an Fj40 as a restoration project as wanting to build up something of my own enjoying the challenge of restoring a vehicle. So I started looking for a likely project online and stumbled across an image of a FJ55. I was hooked immediately and thought they look great, funny looking, very distinctive shape. So started seeing what was available in New Zealand and found.....nothing. They did exist here but very few and far between the reason you will all know Rust! They had all simply rotted away and had been parked up in paddocks or scrapped due to not being warrantable.
Still I kept on looking mainly on our local auction website and saw one spring up in Queenstown for sale but it was in good condition at the other end of the country and asking too much so that one was out. By luck while idly trawling the Trademe website I found a old 1930 Chevy car being sold but in the dim background the unmistakable shape of an FJ55! I contacted the owner of the Chevy and was told that if wanted, it was for sale. So I went down to Tauranga and had a look, it was in pretty bad shape lots of rust though some had being repaired like the rockers and some floor panels.
Anyway beggars cant be choosers so bought it off him for too much and had it sent up to Auckland.
I wanted a project...I've got one.

Anyway here's some pictures behold the horror!

Welcome aboard! Your wagon doesn't look bad, most of the parts are there and at least your cat has a buddy. What's your plans for it.

Hi, Yor piggie seems to have found a clean sleeping room.
Much work to come
Friendly.

Thanks! Yes the pictures do make it look better but there is a lot of bog the roof is badly rusted, the door skins will have to be replaced among other things.
Going for a full frame off rebuild try and do all panel work myself. Give it disc brakes ,power steering and a possible re power. Hoping for something like what you have at the end.
My cats being sleeping in it. Don't think she liked me moving it inside probably thinks it's hers.☺

A kitty in a pig... something is wrong in this story...
Seriously, trailer trucks still use drum brales, I suppose it is a proof of efficiency. Why does anyone need to swap to disk brakes? in your case Jasferg, I think it is not the more important..
Friendly Pascal

It's mostly for ease of maintenance don't want to spend my weekend's adjusting brakes rather than driving it. Had a Ford escort with drums all round when I was young it was awful.

Got some good work today on stripping down to bare bones. Rear quarter windows and windscreen is out (man that window sealant is nasty sticky stuff, got it everywhere!). Found out the original colour was a bright yellow all over the vehicle, no two tone.

Seats are out, so is the headliner removed all the doors.
Think the front bench seat is original but not sure what do you guys think? Think I will still keep it both seats will be reupholstered in black vinyl.

While removing the doors worked out a couple of hints you guys probably already know about.
1. push a rag down the bottom of the pillars so any hinge bolts get caught and don't disappear to the bottom. (found that one out the hard way!)
2. If your alone and want to remove doors use a computer/office chair. has adjustable height and wheels and can support the weight no problem.

Here's some other pics with items that appear to be different US 55s. Oh and some of my rust problems
The interior door handles are a top mounted version
Different mounted exterior rear vision mirrors
Clear indicator lenses maybe because of sun fade?

Hi mate nice looking pig can't wait to see what you do with it. I'm far from an expert but the couple of 55s I've had 75 76 77 the bench was different although that one looks as if it would be comfy.

Thanks. Looks like you seats are quite bit different. Having looked at images on the net thinking it might be from a 70s holden by the way the head rest are shaped. And yes it is comfy will keep it part of the history of the car.

I'm glad you're keeping the seat. I had the idea I wanted to keep it factory but along the line realised it is my car not a museum piece.

Yes true. My one is running a 350 chevy with a turbo 400 so not original by any stretch of the imagination. Will just fix dodgy things like the gear selector which can drop into reverse by itself. The idea is for a fun wagon that's easy to drive.

Made some good progress since my last post. The interior is vitually gutted with just the steering column, brakes and the dodgy transmission selector to remove. Starting to attack the front with the front guards off and grill this has been a bit of challenge with broken and seized bolts slowing things down. Still not bad seeming we have just had wee girl Emilia who is now just 9weeks old, 30minutes there an hour here it all adds up!
