5-ish year bump.. looking forwards to giving this 40 some love and attention. Thanks @landwagon for the sale and picking us up at the airport.

My dad and I flew from Orlando to West Virginia with a few tools and spares and drove this one 800 miles home last week. Smooth sailing cruising 70-75mph other then the fuel pump going out around Rock Hill SC which held us up for 2-3 hours.

Definitely a lot of little things that need tweaking and improvement but a great starting point as far as Cruiser purchases go.

First thing when I got it home to the shop was to actually tune the idle with my vacuum gauge… now it’s running perfect.
Also dug my matching mustard 75-76 tire carrier out of storage only to find I was missing hinges. Thanks @kevos37 for the hookup on those.

Next up is fixing the brakes and suspension. It stops fine but the booster is shot, and the drums need some adjustment as it pulls a bit. Going to run the drums for now and put discs on it at some point.
As for the suspension my big complaint is the shocks and rear spring setup, it is WAY too stiff.

Love to see the truck and excited to see it is getting some attention! I was thinking about it the other day and wondering what the latest was so I appreciate the update! I am really bummed I didn't get a call it was for sale, I would have bought it back. Keep up the good work and keep this thread alive! Also, definitely put the log back on, it will bolt right up with some long wood screws.

Congratulations Matt…

I’ll update later with what I’ve done to this one since the purchase, but this weekend I drove it 600 miles each way to ONSC Carolina Relic Run, a few issues but nothing that held me up for more then a few minutes.
The 40 does cruise effortlessly at 70mph, straight and smooth, and I still have a few tweaks to make yet :)
The issues we did have were:
-Bikini top blew off on the way up (reinstalled and pulled it tighter with ratchet straps)
-more on this later but still having some sort of fuel delivery issue after long drives, I actually hooked up the original pump back up a few weeks ago, and figured maybe I had just ran out of gas on the road trip home?
The truck running perfectly until I filled it with gas the second time this trip, then had no fuel delivery at all. Temporarily installed the electric pump I had to use on the road trip home. No issues with this after. Will pull OEM pump and diagnose later.
- alternator pulley fell off 45 minutes from home. Very fortunately someone randomly gave me a alternator core in passing at camp the night before to rob parts off of. 15 minutes later and back on the road. I could have had someone get a alternator from my shop and bring it out but that would have been a few hours.
-temp gauge is pegging while on the highways cruising over 60mph, but it didn’t seem to ever loose coolant or have any adverse effects so I just ignored it. Will do full cooling system baseline later, I wanted to before this trip since everything looks pretty crusty but didn’t get around to it.

Overall a solid trip, I didn’t wheel the truck but my friends took it out and previous owner Tim @landwagon came out and took it out for the day and had a blast.

1200 mile Round trip in the rear view mirror….it is STILL a big balls move. 👏 👏 👏 nice

Lets see what I did to it before the trip..
first thing was the rear suspension. Not sure what the long term plan for this one is so didn’t want to drop the coin on a full suspension kit, so I just did a quick SOA in the rear with some stock springs and shackles with 2-3 leafs removed. I also didn’t cut the lower perches off so it’s easily reversible.

This only cost me some U-bolts, bushings, shackles and some spring perches and shock mounts. Have plenty of stock springs around. I make the stock replacement U-bolt plates.

I also cut down the spring perches to help prevent it from being too tall.
After removing some leaves and putting some miles on it sits nice and level.

MASSIVE ride improvement for only a Saturday morning and few parts.

I also brought it in during a work day, and installed:

-Air intake cone that was missing
-New OEM fuel tank to replace the garbage poly tank that only holds 12 gallons, along with all soft fuel lines and reinstalled the missing evap system
-new clutch master, slave cyl, and hose since the clutch hydraulics felt awful
-bunch of other misc OEM bits, left turn signal that was broken, pedal pads were missing, Koito H4 kit with my brackets of course
-new battery cables
-new starter because the stud snapped off the old one
-V-belt, and checked all fluids

-oh and WASHED IT since it was absolutely filthy.

@kbahus it’s a shame the pics on the first couple of pages disappeared. Any chance you still have them? If you do you could edit that post and add them.

I agree, I need to check my old laptops, I bet I still have them.
My old laptops are full of pictures I backed up even before Photobucket sucked and went behind a paywall. My tech guy ten years ago helping me pull from a dead laptop commented I had more pictures than he normally sees. I said you can open them it’s nothing bad. I like Toyotas. I would save pics from pirate and Ttora I liked to make slideshow screen savers. I probably have a few of this mustard cruiser with the wood bumper and at a cruiser meet a decade ago I liked the pics from mud where a blue cruiser had mustard doors and hard top and the mustard cruiser had blue doors and hardtop at the meet.
I remember random stuff like that but not my wife’s bday or even my own one year.
