I needed some gutter mounts and bars for my roof tent and an upcoming roof rack project I've been scheming, so I paid a visit to Ralph at Quik-n-Easy Products in Azusa, CA. After cruising craigslist and finding person after person wanting $150 for a 10 year old beat up pair of Yakima bars, I called Quik-n-Easy to price their products. I needed six mounts and three bars. Each set of four mounts and two bars is referred to as a "carrier" by Quik-n-Easy, so I needed one and a half carriers. An odd order for some of their retailers, but it was no problem buying them straight from the company.

The entire package--six gutter mounts, three 60" zinc-plated steel bars, cap ends and decals--came out to $166.86 (w/o shipping--I picked 'em up).

Ralph was a cool guy to talk to, and a guy who respects Cruisers. His daughter and son-in-law own an FJ55 that they are putting a Corvette engine in or some crazy thing.

The mounts have a sturdy feel to them. They were fairly simple to install as well, and I think they'll make a great basis for a roof rack. I'll come back and review them again once the tent is up and used.

nice!

and a great price as compared to yakima mounts and bars...

:D

i've seen those quick an easy mounts. They are quite nice. you can really torque them on.

Do you know if you can paint them? Black would be nice.

I had some powdercoated once (I wanted the whole rack to be black). It turned out pretty nice, although the rubber that coats the mount where it sits in the rain gutter had to be removed. I recoated those places with the vinyl dip you can buy at hardware stores, but it was not as nice as the original coating.

what is the benefit of one of these racks vs. a basket rack? or vise versa?

agreed, awesome bulletproof mounts and ralph is great to deal with. something reassuring about zero plastic parts.

i bought a bunch used and stripped them down, rubber included and then just repainted redipped and ran some vacuum line for a little extra buffer, working and holding up flawlessly thus far.

Looks good. How much weight do you estimate you will be able to load with the three bar setup?

That's a good question, and I think a rather subjective one. I think the bars and mounts are capable of holding a lot more weight than I would be comfortable driving with, especially on a highway, or off-camber in the dirt. I'm at the limit of my comfort zone with the idea of putting my 120 lb. roof tent on there. I have yet to do it, and I'll see how it handles when I do.

With the weight distributed evenly, I'd expect the rack to handle 400-500 lbs. static weight (weight when parked). It has to, 'cause me and a buddy or my wife plus the roof tent would probably reach that.

Once my trailer project is done, the roof tent will go on the trailer, and the roof rack will be used to handle light and bulky items, short distance lumber trips to Home Depot, etc.

I'm about to order a tent and these racks...Have you installed the tent up there yet? If so hows it working for you?

.

I don't think you wanted to say it quite that way!

Nice looking rack for the $$.

Shahram,

Can you give me the vertical measurement from the top of the gutter to the bottom of the cross bar. I need tihs to see if it will fit my application.

ALF

Sorry I didn't see this sooner. The roof tent on the rack worked great. It was a little more "shifty", especially driving on the highway with a sideways wind, but not too terrible. I didn't notice any movement of the rack at all.

Alf, the distance from the top of the gutter to the bottom of the pole is 7 1/4". Remember, that's from the very top of the rain gutter to the very bottom of the pole.

One thing to remember about this rack is that when you receive it, take a minute and glue the rubber parts on to the rack with a little crazy glue. I've lost a bunch of the rubber ends on the rack.

I used a set of these for hauling ladders and tools on my 80 this summer. maybe 150 pounds? the quality is great, no complaints, I ordered just the feet and made my own cross bars

if what you are doing can take it the 4" mounts fit perfectly on an 80 riding just above the roof, but they are harder to find. for what I was doing i would not have been able to open the fit gate with the 4" mounts.
