Want to take the parents and wife/boys for a casual scenic drive. As far as Hewitt Canyon what is a good turn around point, or time frame, to come back? Would we see enough if we just went an hour or so in and turn around? Never been there obviously, don't want to miss anything worth seeing if it's further along on the trail.
Thanks for any input.

Ok I'm open. That's be a nice little drive as well up to the lake.

There are a couple of very nice scenic trails in the Hewitt area, but don't meet the "casual scenic drive" criteria.

I agree with Phil for first-time visitors to AZ

Tonto Bridge is also worthwhile as a road trip

if you are looking for more dirt: Bulldog Canyon seemed to be a hit with the midwesterners we showed a bit more than a year ago (needs a permit from the Mesa Ranger Station - permit is free but need to register); Four Peaks Road provides great views, but can be slippery when wet

and I have always liked taking people up Humboldt Mountain off of Seven Springs Road (FR24) - great views all around 360 degrees

if you desire even more dirt, FR41 would also be a possibility if there hasn't been much rain - but DO NOT accidentally turn onto FR37

:lol::lol::lol:That's only a problem in a rental jeep:doh:

Excellent thanks all. Great to have options, I'll see what the folks are up for.

I know its a bit long for what you are looking for, but you could load up a light lunch, run out to Cottonwood Canyon, run up to the 5 way at Ajax, take the middle trail on the south side that takes you to the Sunset Mine area. You can either run the Step (waterfall) or take the go-around on either side, then stay in Box Canyon all the way out west to Price Rd. Easy half day run, and great scenery. Lunch at the old adobe stage stop is a great way to really reach out and feel the history of the area. John

Most of you guys have probably done this already, first time for us, but ended up running Hewitt Canyon with parents and boys. Had a blast.

Ended up going all the way around on Hewitt Canyon Rd to 650 etc.

bet the kids had a blast!

Yes they did. My little guy is asking when we can go "4 wheelin" again. Now they have a leg up on the cousins in the "look what we got to do" department.
