Working on an old Rochester carb tonight on '72 fj40.
After adjusting linkage and a good dousing with carb cleaner, I fired it up. I got several colors of smoke before a clang/bang and then running water sound. Engine still running but fan had come off completely and collided with fan housing. Water pouring from under the fan.

Anyone know the part number of the plastic fan that will bolt up?

This part number 054-009B is a plastic fan blade that should work at SOR's site http://www.sor.com/sor/products2.tam?category.ctx=054-009&page#.ctx=054 You could also check at Camelback Toyota and see if one from that time frame is still available new.

Another option is buy a matching water pump, pulley, fan clutch, fan blade and shroud. This is what I did with a FJ45 with a early 2F. Not all the hole in the radiator housing matched the shroud but it worked find.

be glad it didn't happen at 65 mph on the 101 :bang: good thing I was about to exit at 56th street anyway, huge steam clouds coming out of my hood at the end of the ramp - not to speak of all the water

Ouch!

You will need 2 rolls of duct tape to fix that fan. Ah...the life of FJ40 owner is never relaxing or boring. :) :bang:

Is the Radiator ok?

And since no one else has said it yet: That'll buff right out....

:D

the steel fans are known for that. be glad you weren't bent over the engine when it happened...and wouldn't it be "catastrophic fan blade failure"?;)

a well know Tucson mechanic lost an eye from an orange fan failure

if you run them, it's a good idea to check for stress cracks occasionally

Hi All:

IMHO, electric-driven radiator fans are overly troublesome for any benefit they might have.

The engine-drive fans are simple and work well.

Regards,

Alan

How do you guys feel about electric cooling fans in lieu of the belt driven OEM fan?

Fan contact with radiator. Tore all the way down to some clean copper.
