Black and white, Landcruiser and Prado. The 250 seems so much more “light duty” than I thought it would. It really does look like a 4Runner next to the 300. It’s not a very flattering image.
You can tell that by looking at the body?

The 250 was designed entirely by a N American team not the Japanese. Hard to say what their inspiration was in fact. There is nothing of the shibui inspired aesthetics of the previous great Japanese designed trucks like the 40s, 60s and 70s. That is for sure.
It was inspired by 40/50/60/70/80/90.

Exterior was designed by calty but it did have some input from Japan.

So many mudders were complaining about the styling of the 200 -- "bloated", "looks like a Highlander", "too round and soft". Toyota gives us a more squared off LC, with a bit of a heritage look, and what happens? Mudders find a reason to criticize that too. Can't win for losing.

We have to get used to these
It's what we will get until the mid 2030s.
We are in for the ultra long haul.

I still didn't see more aggressive response than 100 series when it first made its debut.

Proof for this regarding engineering?

I'll never forget that Utah reveal when they rolled the 70 series off first and it stole the show, upstaged the 250 completely. And you and I commented on that first photo spread that juxtaposed the 60 series with the front end of the 250. That was another unfortunate and not very flattering image. So if you put the 250 next to a 6o, 70 or 300 it shows poorly.

I cannot understand why they went to so much trouble to design these two rectangular growths on the front side. They are just there, suspended in the air, don’t seem to fit well in the place made for them. Its not a very organic Japanese design. You don’t see anything like it in any classic Toyota.

Correct. I just think that's a more apples to apples to compare to overtrail which is a $14k price difference. That isn't small.

Regardless the percentage of LC250 or GX owners willing to do locker installs or axle swaps will be laughably small compared to the masses.

I mean I'm sure plenty of people will buy the LC250 thinking they can build it out like the LC200s (e.g., lift, bigger tires, front and rear bumper, roof rack, roof top tent, fridge, second battery, etc.), which will really push the 8.2" rear axle. The base $64k GX550 is just the better platform to start from. No worries about the 9.5" axle taking 1000+lbs of extra weight or the turbo charged engines. The 8.2" axles do fine on 4runners, GX460s, etc. but you have to remember those don't have turbo charged engines either.

No, never broached the subject. This discussion has been about the form, the exterior design that lacks gravitas or presence compared to historical models. I am sure the substance, the engineering is first rate. I don’t think anyone expects anything less from Toyota or we simply wouldn’t be here bothering about it at all.

I think the idea is that those odd looking trim pieces are supposed to represent the FJ40 front clip. It's a design that should have been left on the white board, but that's at least the general idea I think:

IMO something like this could really bring the look together for me. And this is something the aftermarket could pretty easily do.

In my opinion the 250 (not the GX) is best looking new Land Cruiser in the US market since the 62.

The 80 burst onto the scene as a... Bubble. A weird, awkward overreach, like a newly-divorced mom's grand entrance at the bar. Toyota overcorrected by making the 100 only a bit less boring to look at than an empty cement room. With the wide and cumbersome 200, Toyota resigned itself to styling defeat.

But the 250 is pleasantly staid. It's slightly sporty, not weird and not boring; they (mostly) kept a lid on retro cheese. The tall wheel wells, narrow tires, low beltline, and tall greenhouse combine for a simple, classic look - functional, capable, all business, and squared instead of awkwardly rounded. The styling, to my eye, and to my sense of the US lineage, is something they really (and finally) got right.

LOL them be some "wicked" dirt roads and creeks. Glad to see the nitwits survived and the LC somehow managed to make it through those daunting obstacles.
