I removed the garage door opener mount and installed my remote face 7800 up there instead. It is pretty good looking. The mic is going to come out next to the Cigarette an Power suppy. The main unit is mounted under the passenger side seat.

I will say the 100 series headliner and A pillar are awesome. It is so simple to remove the sunvisors and grab handles and gain access to everything. 2 thumbs up to Toyota for ditching the cloth headliner!:)

Eric-That looks great!

My prediction is that by the time you are done, you'll like the 100 just fine.

What you are looking at is the remote head. It actually has really good visibility from the driver's and passenger's seat. I took the photo looking up from the center console so it looks a little goofy. This radio also has mic controls. I think I'm set on this one.

The CB has been a headache though.

You could mount it to the inside of the cover if you took off the metal bar. At first I thought about doing that. Then I decided that I didn't like how it looked when it was flipped down. It annoyed me as it was right up against the mirror. Depending upon your use the flip down may not bother you. I used Velcro to attach it. The face units are very light so it shouldn't be an issue and I can pull it out easily and leave the cords if I want to use it in a different rig.

OK thinking about this using the flip down deal some more. You could mount it to the metal plate if you flipped the plate upside down. What you don't see is there is a cord coming out of the back of the remote face as well as one from the side. So you'd have to drill a hole in the flip down deal if you mounted it directly to the flip down deal. That wouldn't look very clean.

It is under the passenger side seat. There is a little cubby hole that the radio fits in perfectly. I'm not sure if I will need an external speaker or not. I wired an aux fuse box in my console. There are these little divots in the 100 series console and the 6 fuse panel fit perfectly in there. I'll use the other fuses to give full time power to my Acc. 12 volt plugs and to add some switches. The CB is the next challenge. I'm not sure what to do.

Hey Eric... any updates on the success/failure of this install? I'm trying to figure out where to mount my 8800, and this is looking like one of the better options.

Did you make or purchase an extension cord for the hand mic? Since it plugs into the side of the head unit, I figured as much.. one thing I don't want is the cord hanging down like some trucker. :)

edit: And anyone know are there any other 100 series 7800/7900/8800/8900 installs documented up here? I been searching, this is the only one I've found..

What did you want to know specifically? I didn't document my FT8900 install but I can answer questions?

In general the head is in the PS rear storage compartment. I ditched the double DIN CD/cassette deck and mounted the face in the "pocket" under the new CD player.

Mine is located under the PS seat. It works awesome. I run a telephone wire with a reversed end from the control face in the sunglasses holder to under the seat. Then I run another telephone wire to below the dash and the mic plugs into that and it comes out right near the shifter. It works great. You need to remove the big foam pad spacer under the carpet and then it fits in easily right on top of the computer under the seat.

Hey there is life over here.. cool thanks guys.

So after wasting an hour trying to see where to poke wires through I ended up running everything through the passenger side grommet.. had to clip off that nipple and then some to get the coax connector and quick-connect of the ham through, but eventually got it. I tell you that big happy grommet with nothing else in it on the DS firewall in the 80 sure makes things like this easy, but I'll get over it...

My head unit it literally wedged under the computer thing under the passenger seat. It's very snug down there, but the nice thing is the fan is pointed up and outwards, so it should still get some air.. the downside is I'll probably have to pull the seat any time I want access to it. I had to get something in there though as we've got a trip coming this weekend..

Only thing left is the head unit, I'm leaning towards the lip of the ashtray to start.. but also considering a swivel-style mount for the tranny console in the future.

Alright since I wasn't able to find a whole lot more info on 100 series installs, I'll go ahead and toss my install up here. The rig is the FT-8800 Yaesu, same install as the 7800/7900 though, and 8900 for that matter.

I ran the wires through the passenger side firewall grommet, I used one of the antenna brackets that my buddy Groucho makes (and I sell :D), and I put the actual radio underneath the passenger seat.

I drilled a hole in the ashtray lip and mounted the faceplate there, for now. Not sure I'll leave it there because I want to do more with that coin holder slot, but for now it's actually pretty handy, and it doubles as the handle for the ashtray.

I put the remote speaker just behind the parking brake, screwed to the center console.. nice little pocket below the armrest, and yes the brake and armrest still extend fully. Plus it's nice and loud being so close..
