if the etching is still deep enough, I would think you could paint it and then wipe it clean leaving the color still sitting in the letter grooves, I have not done this myself but have heard of others whom have done it, I was planning on doing this as well.....

arent they raised tho? and have (on the flat) printing around the raised letters/numbers?
The guys that painted my '55 painted right over the VIN plate on the door pillar

what would be trick is if shane could re-silkscreen the original plate once cleaned up.

I offered before to do it. Just make sure your local laws are ok with reproducing vin plates. I would need the exact size and a high quality scan or picture. It would be diamond tip engraved for the deep letters or laser engraved for the smooth look. email me at chet@besttrophiesandawards.com

Yeah I'm going to change it. It's one of my new years resolutions. I just need to bribe Woody with a case of Makers Mark and a some Hooters chics over to his house so he will let me have my original one back. I miss her.
