1) Yes, the front cross-support comes off easily and dangles from the hood latch cable 'til you're done.
2) I've always pulled the engine and tranny together.
3) Um, you could. I always pull the external stuff off 'cause it gets in the way.

Don't forget to unhook the choke cable! And the back-up light switch wires. And the speedo cable.
 
Remove the radiator fan.

Pull together. Use a load leveler (it makes it easier). Remove the hood. Drain the fluids. This includes the block coolant drain. If nothing comes out remove the whole thing and stick a small screwdriver in there until it does. Cap the hard fuel lines at the frame. Take the parking brake drum off and remove the parking brake retaining bolts. (4 of them). The put the drum back on. Make sure the speedo cable doesn't hang up on anything. Removing the air cleaner will gain you a little wiggle room.
